why does everyone collect cards?

seems to me all anyone wants to collect is cards that have a price tag on them... everything is either high-end or nothing at all... i'm not saying there is anything wrong with high-end cards, but whatever happened to good 'ole trading cards for the love of it... i collect cards of my favorite teams and my favorite players (as do a lot of u), but it just seems most people are in it for the $$$ part and not for the passion... i could be wrong, but this is the way i look at it... everything is always about beckett this or beckett that... if it's a common, u better throw it away... commons are my favorite cards!!!!... u get the cards of your favorite players and they are very cheap... i like high-end cards as well, but it just irritates me when that's all someone wants to collect... i really do not understand...

i'm not tryin to carry on about this, but i just wanted to get everyone else's opinion on why THEY collect cards... i know a lot of u collect cards because it's fun and because u have a favorite player(s)/team(s)... but, not everyone does that... feel free to post all opinions...

I don't really collect, I just like opening packs and seeing what I pull. The only cards I really collect are Hornets certified autos and I have 300+.

I have a Champ Bailey Jersey from Leaf Certified Materials if you need that card.

Have been a baseball and Red Sox fan since my youth and collecting cards is a natural (for me) extention of that. A fun way to look at stats and facts on your favorite player

I like sports pics, especially the Stadium Club action shots that they capture every year. I also collect vintage, hard to find cheap, since it's from an era when sports were pure and "for the love of the game."

My brother left a bunch of his cards when he left home and I kind of inherited them, so I started buying more to finish some of his sets. I got hooked when I started going to Spurs games and took interest in the players. When we got Tim I knew he was going to be a great player so wanted all his rookie cards. Had no idea it would lead to trying to collect all his cards, but it has. I love all of them too, some of his best are just itty bitty ones. Now I just love the hobby and especially like to help others with their favorites. I know some people collect just to make a buck off of players, but to me that is so shallow. I am excited to pull great cards don't get me wrong, but when I do I look at it as an opportunity to help someone else get a great card of their favorite player. That's why I prefer trading to selling. It just seems a lot more fun when you are collecting cards of players you truly like, and don't let anybody intimidate you, to each his own!!! It's all good

I collect cards becasue I think it's an awesome hobbie. I try to get everything I can of people I collection, autos, rc's, gu'ed, INSERTS, THAT'S RIGHT inserts, that's what splits the line between real collectors and those just in it for the cash..... Nothing is wrong with that though, I just condier it a hobby instead of a job.

I always said that I would collect to make a profit. Kind of hard to make a profit when you just don't want to get rid of the cards. I love collecting. Not sure my wife loves me collecting (expensive). Been doing it off and on since 1980. Jsut got very serious this year.

Why?? I do it to trade with YOU ThiTo..lol . Seriously..I just LOVE to trade. I also, feel it's a way to pay homage to the player you like. Watching him grow from his COLLEGE cards to his current NBA cards. Also, I'm what the call a "Crack" addict. I LOVE to crack boxes and packs...LOL.

Hey... high dollar cards are great... but i always trade for low end cards of players that i collect. Luckily... they are mostly commons...lmao. Just wish there was more hockey collectors on here so that i could get more.

I only collect cartain players in my personnal collection - like Fred Taylor,Brunell & Brett Favre - everything else I have for trade to get cards I need - I also put together 2 sets each year - I put together the Topps Set then I pick another 1 - 2001 I am doing the Fleer Legacy set - but after collecting for a few year it becomes very addicting - now I just love to open packs to see what I get..........................If anyone has any rookies to help me out on the Legacy set it would be very appreciated...

Thito- yes I just collect Duncan, although this year I have been collecting Tony Parker as well as I think he has a lot of potential and like him as a person off the court. I collect Tim because of the same reasons, he is such a hard worker and I admire his game so much. He is also such a class act off the court with his charities and good sportsmanship. I couldn't collect a player that I didn't like as an all around nice person. That's just my standard though.

I mainly (and the last year only) Shaq , Fisher and Horry. It's hard for me to collect EVERY Shaq card (like duncangal does with Duncan) as I live in Europe, and cards are real expensive over here. Fisher is another thing.. he's not that wanted but I just love him cauz of his outside shot and his leadership over a star-studded team (kinda reminds me of me in my playing days, the only thing I could do well was hitting 3's and leading my little team). Horry is kinda easy too, I love him because he's one of the most underrated players in the league, he's got ice going through his vains, he plays excellent defense and can hit 'some' threes too. Shaq is just my main man, I have about 500 commons/inserts of him.. 12 GU and 2 auto's. When I first got into collecting I didn't collect 1 particular player, but then the Olympics came and I saw Shaq playing and I thought.. that man is awesome! So I just started collecting him and the search goes on..

You sound like me with your Redskins room. Basically everything I have is decorated with Hornets stuff, and will add new stuff after the move to N.O. Have around 75 auto'd 8X10s on my wall, all the starting lineups, media guides, table, banners, personalized autographed team jersey, Baron Davis Game worn auto'd shoes, Mashburn game worn auto'd shoes, pj brown game worn auto'd shoes, Hersey Hawkins game worn auto'd shoes, 5 auto'd basketballs, memorabilia, and much more. I think it's more fun when you become the die hard fan like you are with the Redskins and I am with the Hornets. I am the 6th man in Milwaukee when they come to town. They are 3-0, guess it's because I'm louder than the entire crowd that attended home games in Charlotte and had front row courtside seats behind the team and silas. Would you ever consider giving up or selling your collection unless you had to? I definately wouldn't and hope when I pass it on, they keep the memorabilia going and the dream alive.

ever since I heard the name kobe it was over. I knew that name would make him famous, but it's actual been his play. I collect his cards not because he's winning, but because he does something everygame EVERY single game that just makes you go .......WTF
not many players do that.

i'm not collecting all his cards to sell one day, but to pass it on or get it buried with me. For all I know he could end up like crap and it all could be worthless, but thats the risk we all take collecting our favorite players. it's one hell of a fun hobby though if you ask me.

I mainly got into cards because of my love of sports. Any sport, any team....Of course I dont mind making a few $ here and there...but I love collecting my favorite players as well...it also gives me something to do every day and to keep up with

hitechkoolaid... that is great man... that sounds just like my "game room" (room where i keep all my Skins stuff - also got a foosball table in there, hence the "game room" name - lol)... u got a lot more than me, but i'm still adding... i am a DIE-HARD fan of my Washington sports teams - especially my Skins... i gotta agree with u though about being the die-hard fan - it's so much fun... and no, i would NEVER get rid of all my memorabilia... it will be passed on to my kids and hopefully to their kids... i wish my parents had done the same for me... i love collecting Skins cards and memorabilia because i am such a big fan and i think it makes it that much more fun...

well thito..i like to collect high end cards cause theres more in it, and its more fun for me, on top of the fact that this is an expensive hobby, and trading is expensive...but as u may not have known, i collect Jets cards religiously, and have about 1000 jets commons, inserts, jerseys, autos, and rookies...take a look sometime on my page the jets are my boys, and ill take any jets cards, cause i love them and collecting them.

like i said before, i see nothing wrong with collecting high-end cards... my problem lies where that's all u collect... commons started this game... plus to me, commons are the best... if u love collecting, u can stock up on commons because they are so cheap... i don't have $$$ to be spending like crazy, so commons are an affordable way to keep collecting... plus, i think commons are cool... same with inserts... they make it fun... and SkiVermont3, i have a TON of Jets commons... maybe we can trade sometime...
