He's the best catcher of the 90s...nuff said. His basic stats are .296 BA, 2844 hits, 311 taters, 1332 RBIs, but he's also 14x All-Star, 13x Gold Gloves (all-time record for catchers), not to mention he not only won a championship in 2003 for Miami, but three years later he helps Detroit make it to the World Series just three years removed from their infamous 119 loss 2003 season.

Apparently he was mentioned in that silly Canseco book but you gotta make a better case than that. For example, McGwire came clean about his 'roid use a few years ago, and Barry Bonds, well, let's just say he got a swollen head in more ways than one. image I will say, the reason Barry got into the whole 'roids thing in the first place is rather sad because prior to that he was the only player at the time to get three MVPs in four years and was clearly among the best players of the 90s...but grew frustrated because he wasn't getting nearly as much attention as hobby/fan favorites Griffey/Thomas and then of course the whole McGwire/Sosa thing is what ultimately turned him to the dark side.

Please understand, I say that as a former fan of his. I was a catcher and he was the best. Sucked to find out.
  • Ivan Rodriguez February 2005

Linked To: Steroids (Deca-Durabolin and/or Winstrol, Testosterone), HGH

The Story: In Juiced, Jose Canseco claims to have educated Rodriguez, along with Rafael Palmeiro and Juan Gonzalez, about steroids when they were teammates in Texas. He subsequently claims to have acquired steroids on behalf of all three before personally injecting each of them 'many times.' Canseco says all three used a combination of HGH and steroids (Deca-Durabolin and/or Winstrol) and 'a small dose' of injectable testosterone.

Mike Piazza was the greatest hitting catcher of all time. Look at IRod's stats during his MVP season- those were pretty much Piazza's numbers over his entire career except for some batting average points. I don't care how few base stealers he threw out, his batting numbers more than made up for that and he was easily the best catcher (taking everything into account) during the juiced ball/PED era.

Rodriguez was awesome to watch and definitely had a HOF career, but Piazza's numbers are significantly better with 2500+ fewer at bats.

I don't understand why you say Canseco's book was silly. Seems to me most of the guys he claimed were doing steroids were guilty.

Not to mention he put up big numbers at a point in his career when most older catchers would be in decline statistically.

It's more then just base stealers, I think you discount defense too much, having a strong defensive catcher is a huge plus.

It would be close but all things considered I would say most managers would have took Rodriguez over Piazza.

I remember watching the 2003 NLCS, Cubs vs Marlins. Joe Borowski on the mound, Pudge batting.
Joe B gets ahead in the count, then throws a curve .....way off the plate, and Ivan just went with
the pitch, poked a single to right field. Terrific ball player, but he won't get in with the allegations against
    him.

Piazza's defense is underrated due to his admittedly poor ability to throw runners out. He was more than adequate behind the plate and calling a game.

Well, let's see. Pudge played on the same team with Canseco, Palmeiro, and Juan Gonzalez. Those 3 have been linked to steroids. So, yep, Pudge was clean.
Sarcasm aside, I don't believe he makes the HOF. The steroid cloud will hover over him. Just my opinion.

Pete Rose didn't cheat in anyway. He was called Charlie Hustle because he played the game the right way. And all that betting on baseball stuff came after he retired as a player besides.

He certainly has the pedigree to be HOF bound, but I think the vale of PED's that surround will have him waiting longer than you would think based on his stats alone.

At this point in time, i just cannot see the baseball writers voting to let anyone in who had, let's call it "well documented" (?) connections to PEDs

Palmeiro is one of only 4 guys EVER to have 500/3000, and he's fallen off the ballot. Sosa will fall off after the next one, and potentially McGwire as well.

I like Pudge a lot, but the writers will not look over this stuff. If he doesn't START above 35-40%, he will have no chance.
