Vintage Autograph or Vintage Baseball Card?

Would you prefer to purchase a vintage autograph or a vintage baseball card of a legendary HOF player? The sports card would not be graded higher than a PSA 3. You may use Babe Ruth as a point of reference, but the question does not apply only to him.

Auto, depending on what it was on. Card if auto was only on a scrap of paper.

If the example is Ruth then auto no question. If they played post WWII I'd dare say almost all of my choices would be cards.
Before then, most likely auto. Especially if they were the immortals

card. There is always a chance that the auto is fake even with a reputable authenticator or the auto fades after 20 years or so.

I'm a true card collector first and foremost. An autograph is cool in almost any way, but I would NEVER chose one over a card. This might be OT but I cringe every time I see an autograph on a nice rookie card...just not meant to be together...the last Chicago show there were people buying up Yount rookies to have him sign them....AAAAAARRRRGGGHHHHHHH!!! Sorry, too much coffee.

Exactly this. Personally, and only speaking for myself, I would never use an extremely nice well-centered vintage card for an autograph. For every beautiful example of a card, there is 100 of the same exact card that is off center or doesn't present as well. I would rather use a lower-grade example for my autograph needs. To answer the OP's question though, if it were up to me, I would take the card everytime. I prefer card collecting over autograph collecting. Any baseball autographs I own are on baseballs not cards, so I decided to stick with that route. Ink on a card never appealed to me.

If the auto is on a ball AND certified by PSA/DNA or Steiner, then maybe the auto, depending on who signed it. Ruth, Gehrig, and Cobb would be my choices over a card.

But other than those (and I reserve the right to add to that list), a card is probably the more popular choice.
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

If I had the choice between a T206 Honus Wagner and a Honus Wagner Game used bat with auto - I'll take the game used bat auto.

If I had a choice between a mint 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle or a game used Mantle bat with auto - I'll still take the game used bat auto.

So what i'm trying to say is if it's a plain auto then i'll take the card. image

That is a great point GR.

  • I would go with card, unless (as someone else said), said auto is absolutely ascertained to be 100% authentic.

On a personal note, while I have started dabbling in TTM,s I prefer my autographs in person.
