Poorly Centered Sets In Your Collecting Experience

We've had discussions in the past about notoriously OC key singles, be it the M101 Ruth, 51 or 52(B&T) Mick, 76 Brett, 74 Schmidt, 64 Rose, 67 Carew, etc., but I was noticing that some sets have more centering problems across the board than others.

For example, so many of us have seen how the 75 Mini set has endemic centering woes. I was pretty amazed at how bad the 73 set is in this regard-- tilts are all over the place. I love so many of the HOFers from that set, but man is it hard to find a nice example. 69 is pretty outrageous, too. Curious how others' experience is with other sets; been having a lot of fun lately hunting through certain very OC years for anomalously centered HOFers.

I collect the 1985 WWF OPC Series II and the centering is brutal on those. There are a few so far I am not sure that can grade higher then a PSA 7.

You are not joking. I went through 10 sets made from vending and it was ugly. I did get the Savage / Elizabeth PSA 10 out of it but yeah it's not a an easy set for centering.

The 1978 Topps Baseball set is very frustrating with regard to centering.

    I'm sure there's plenty.

63F BB is really tough to get an entire set well centered (45/55 or better).

I just picked traded out an 8.5 for an 8 due to centering. That's probably one of the sub-definitions of insanity?

Stone, I think it's a sign of great sanity. Or maybe that's what an insane person says? LOL. Seriously though I've upgraded cards to the lower grade a bunch of times. What's cool is you essentially get paid a reward for doing so that goes to more cards image

Stone, I agree with DM23HOF. You are not insane. I would have done the same thing.

1971 OPC baseball is notorious for centering/miscuts.

1968 OPC Hockey is one of the toughest in recent memory... However, there are quite a few other cards that are notorious for being consistently off center.
  • 81 Fleer. Brutal.
  • 2001 Topps Chrome Football - Brees, Tomlinson & Wayne PSA 10s are scarce, extremely tough centering
Greatly overpaying for a 2000 Fleer Showcase Tom Brady PSA 10

Stone, I just cracked open a 1978 Topps Baseball Steve Garvey PSA 9 because the centering was slightly off and it was bothering me. I placed it into a Card Saver II and added it to my stack of doubles. I hope that this makes you feel better. image

I've been looking at these 1969 Hof-ers and man are they tough-- it's the way the photos aren't set square in the black frame line plus tilt. My heart goes out to anyone who's ever built a centered 69 set!

62 Topps baseball, doesn't take much to make them look off center!!
