Busting wax tonight...

Stopped by my LCS to chat it up today and bought a box of 89 Fleer and 92 Topps baseball for $5 each. Looking forward to the result this evening.

I ripped an 89 fleer wax box a months ago. For what I paid ($12 I believe), I had a great time. Pulling a Jr. rookie, and a Ripken scribble variation was well worth the $12. Hope you have similar luck.

  • I may not end up busting the 92 Topps. I think there were gold parallels in there, but not sure.

    Yes there was.
  • For a sec I was thinking of the 1993 Topps Black Gold cards. Those were some nice ones. Pretty pricey when they first came out oo and pretty hard to pull - but not as hard as Donruss Elite cards which is why I think the Elites still hold value to them. Nothing going on in 1992 Topps. 89 Fleer is always a fun one to bust - especially if its the wax that includes the FF cards.

I thought I read a thread the other day that you were no longer buying.

    Well that didn't last long.

    Good luck with the packs.

I think it was an observation and not so much Dpeck worrying about another CU member. The "story" to leave the hobby for a period of time changed quicker than someone's new years resolution to get in shape. CU members can do as they chose and I am sure that DPeck does not mind one way or the other, but to make an announcement and to then do otherwise will make one open to questioning.

I have to admit, I liked 1992 Topps. They had the game cards where you could send them in for packs of the gold "winners" variation. The game cards started out printed on white cardboard that you could see through with a flashlight. I think they later printed them on the dull card stock to prevent this.

    over $10 in cards? really?

what happens if he sells something, but takes a cheap wax box as part of the sale? does that count against him too?

I don't think they changed the game cards as most of them were already printed up and distributed in packs already. The original point of the game was to get packs of regular gold cards. Topps came up with the gold 'winners' variations when they begin getting deluged with winning scratch-offs

I meant no harm. Just was surprised to see a thread a few days later buying after the first one.

His words had me believing he was being forced to leave the hobby due to budget issues. I took him seriously.

    Good luck with the packs.

Guys, an assumption was made in the original post, about my budget, that I was leaving. I never said I was because I never planned on it. Plus $10 is in my budget. So let's make sure the story is straight. I have no budget other than what I get from selling and I'm not leaving the hobby.

Nope, they changed cardstock on the scratchoffs. I have one of the grey cardstock game cards right next to me, the first batch/majority were on the thinner white cardstock.

There are some heavy posts in that thread.

I realize $10 is pocket change to some but if someone is saying their hobby budget is completely cut out and they need to find another focus some of us are going to take them seriously.

    It is all good.

  • Let me clarify so that we can move on.

    1. I never said I was leaving the hobby. It was ASSUMED by other posters that I was.
    2. I DID say my budget was down to nothing OTHER THAN what I can make selling stuff.
    3. While DPeck is right that there were some heavy posts in there, when I say something, I mean it. I was down and out about the situation, I felt I explained it well in that thread, and was very encouraged by what other members were saying...even inspired to try and find a focus WITHIN the hobby.

So, since this thread is not about that...let's move on.

I remember the controversy well. People were putting the coated cards under a microscope as well to read through the coating. People were sending in 100's at a time for redemption. I believe later they double coated the coating, much like the lottery ticket scratch offs. The one card I really liked in the set was the Ripken/Gehrig card, where Cal is posing next to the Gehrig plaque.

Busted an 82 donruss box from bbce the other night. Beautiful cards, sharp corners and well-centered for the most part. And not a single ripken. Sitting there amongst all those wrappers, I felt that shame like I just ate a whole box of stove top stuffing and a bag of marshmallows.

Speaking of shame...just started ripping to only realize that there were only 8 packs of the 89 Fleer and the rest are 89 Topps...booooooo!!!! Oh well. Nothing to write home about from the 8 packs.

  • I recall the 92 game cards had patterns..I'd get multiples and use one as a guide.

And we have a ff! First rack box, third rack. Bottom panel, bob welch on top, 11 cards down. My rack case is the one with the fleer logo on it. It won't let me attach a photo from ipad plus I don't want to violate any policies by posting that card. If I get the ok and can figure out how to attach a photo I'll do it.
  • rcmb3220rcmb3220 Posts: 1,108 ✭✭✭✭
And a randy johnson fully blacked out card. I wouldn't expect that card in the same box as the ff error since I assumed it was the final correction of that card.
  • rcmb3220rcmb3220 Posts: 1,108 ✭✭✭✭
Ff 2 and 3 in consecutive racks! Completely different sequence but all in the bottom panel. Tom herr was showing on top in one and it was underneath another herr in the other but different number of cards between. Also bo jackson was the next card after ripken in one and had another card in between on the other.

IIRC, the Johnson variations all happened earlier than the FF coverups. The fully blacked out is the final version of that card.

Sorry for the double post didn't think the first one took. So far 3 ff and one randy johnson complete black out. 2 boxes to go.
