My National Haul with Picture. (Erving Rookie Scan Added)

Here is what I bought. The 62' Basketball Box is empty but had Rick wrap it for me. I now only lack 4 boxes (1973, 1974, 1975, 1986) to complete my 72' - 89' BBCE wrapped basketball wax run. Had a great time with all the guys and can't wait till Chicago!!

I was wondering that too. Why not come to the east coast?

    Hiya Matt

Here's a list of where the Nationals have been.

The one that I heard was unpopular with vendors was in Texas.

2013 Donald E. Stephens Convention Center; Rosemont, IL
    2012 Baltimore (MD) Convention Center
2011 Donald E. Stephens Convention Center; Rosemont, IL
    2010 Baltimore (MD) Convention Center
    2009 I-X Center; Cleveland, OH
2008 Donald E. Stephens Convention Center; Rosemont, IL
    2007 I-X Center; Cleveland, OH
    2006 Anaheim (CA) Convention Center
2005 Donald E. Stephens Convention Center; Rosemont, IL
    2004 I-X Center; Cleveland, OH
2003 Atlantic City (NJ) Convention Center
2002 Donald E. Stephens Convention Center; Rosemont, IL
    2001 I-X Center; Cleveland, OH
    2000 Anaheim (CA) Convention Center
1999 Georgia World Congress Center; Atlanta
    1998 Rosemont (IL) Exposition Center
    1997 I-X Center; Cleveland, OH
    1996 Anaheim (CA) Convention Center
1995 Cervantes Convention Center; St. Louis
1994 George R. Brown Convention Center; Houston
    1993 McCormick Place; Chicago
1992 Georgia World Congress Center; Atlanta
    1991 Anaheim (CA) Convention Center
    1990 Arlington (TX) Convention Center
    1989 Hyatt Regency Hotel; Chicago
1988 Atlantic City (NJ) Convention Hall
    1987 Moscone Center; San Francisco
    1986 Arlington (TX) Convention Center
    1985 Disneyland Hotel; Anaheim, CA
    1984 Aspen Hotel; Parsippany, NJ
    1983 Holiday Inn O'Hare-Kennedy; Chicago
    1982 St. Louis
    1981 Plymouth (MI) Hilton
1980 Marriott Los Angeles Airport Hotel

My take? If one holds it in the middle of the country, it allows far east and west to have somewhat of an equal distance to drive.

    Morning Tim

True - I just posted a list and it's been in Baltimore twice in the last few years.

As I also stated, I think the midwest is a nice compromise for those living on both coasts as an argument for favoring it. I think I remember in the 90s that the vendors voted. Is that the same today?

That is correct, Mike~the locations are voted upon for each year. From what I understand, most dealers are from the eastern and midwestern part of the U.S., and that logistically, it is much easier for them to hold the event on the east coast or in the midwest.

Great pickups Dustin! Glad to see you pulled the trigger on the Dr. J PSA 9...hope you got your price. Didn't realize you scored 2 of the 80/81 boxes...now I am really jealous image

I suspect that the greatest number of hobbyists are congregated on the coasts and in the Northeast. While Dallas and Houston are large cities, outside of them, in any given direction, is an absence of warm bodies and a plethora of empty land. My take, west coast nationals are dominated by west coasters and east coast nationals are dominated by east coasters and Northeasterners, with the greatest congregation being in the NE.

While Texas is a good midpoint, it lacks the local traffic that NE and coastal cities attract, and the distance ostracizes the majority of collectors from each coast.

  • Here is a scan of the Erving Rookie. There were two at the National and this was my second choice but I couldn't make a deal with my first choice. If I see a better one I will upgrade eventually.
