.....well not any shop, mind you, but Rick Snow's Eagle Eye Rare Coins. It is one of the benefits of living in East Tucson.

Rick was just back from a long trip to the DC area and was kind enough to share several images with my friend Deb and me. Quite stunning photos from the Smithsonian including the 1933 Saint. Quite a collection that I need to head East to see one day.

In Rick's case was this Nixon 1st inaugural medal. This piece is in a stunning high relief and weighs in at a healthy 4.8 ounce of .999 silver.

This medal has almost a pewter patina with some cool copper shaded toning on the reverse central devices.

Damn right. I always take my friend with me when I go to the local shops and coin shows. She is disabled so I like to get her out of the house as often as I can.

Rick has always found time to teach us a bit about a new coin or variety or share an interesting story from his travels.

    That stuff is priceless.

Nice to have EERC nearby - I really enjoyed the time that Rick and Brian were in Seahurst - stopped by after every major show to see the NEWPS. image

  • I grew up in Tucson and my Parents are there now so any time I visit them I have to visit Ricks shop. Eye candy is not the words I would use it's more like eye amazement as Rick has some very special coins and does not mind just sharing them with you. He and his staff are fantastic and very knowledgeable. I will have to look around again when I am out in September.

I like that Nixon medal. Kind of thing I would've picked up for fun. The relief makes Nixon look alive.

...gotta love RMN and Ronnie, as they represent the only two US Presidents from my home State in California...that medal had to be in ultra high relief to capture the schnoz that Nixon wore so well image

I remember seeing that medal in a glass case at Gimbel's coin department back in the early 1970s when I began collecting. Satiny.

[q/In Rick's case was this Nixon 2nd inaugural medal.

This medal is from the 1st inauguration, as it is dated January 20, 1969.

The 2nd inauguration would be dated in 1973.

Unfortunately, the Nixon medal exhibits unattractive toning on the reverse and some deterioration on the obverse as well. This is a common problem on medals, both silver and bronze, with the type of lacquered finish used in producing these medals.

I wonder how many of those large silver medals are still around? I have to believe that many, many of them have gone to the great melting pot in the sky.

As Archie Bunker used to say........

"Don't knock my President, Richard 'E' Nixon".
"Gold is money, and nothing else" (JP Morgan, 1912)

"“Those who sacrifice liberty for security/safety deserve neither.“(Benjamin Franklin)
