The court case Olbermann was referring to involves Bowman (Haelan...) and Topps in 1953.
I'm not a lawyer and don't understand all the jargon but it appears that the important part has to do with the right of an individual to own their own likeness/name and can not be used without permission and/or compensation.
It was referred to as a "Right of Publicity" and considered a "property" right so it survives the death of the celebrity.
So, in the legal field they can thank baseball cards for an important landmark decision in the annals of Law.
