Coin submission question

I'm wanting to submit some coins to PCGS to cross (they are running a 5 coin max quarterly special). The 5 coins I want to send in are valued well above $25,000 (the USPS max insurance allowed). What's the best, most secure way to submit coins of this value?

Two options in my mind, others may have alternatives:
    1. Private Insurance- My limit on my policy is 75k per package and I use shipandinsure.
    2. Hand deliver to PCGS at a show

If you have coins like that you should have an insurance policy on them from the likes of Hugh Wood or some such numismatic coverage. If you do not, well, that's another thread. If you do call them up and ask them for a shipping rider.

    Seriously?

If it were me, and the value was over that and I was worried, I would contact PCGS and tell them the value I am planning to submit and say I would like to see if there were a way I could pay my own ticket and fly down and hand it off to a PCGS representative with everything already filled out.

Who do you trust more with your valuable coins? You, or someone else?

Me, I would either do the above or I would just register mail it for $25,000 (max) as I sincerely and seriously doubt anything will happen.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

You can still send them to PCGS by registered mail. Simply declare the total value and the USPS will charge a surcharge per $1,000 beyond the $25K limit. This is used to provide extra security for the shipment. At one time, even the Hope diamond was sent via registered mail.

Is there a requirement from PCGS that all coin in a submission be shipped together? Why not call
and ask if you could break it up into a couple of packages (Just make a copy of the submission form
and write box 1 of 2, or 2 of 2. That should work.

I just punched in on my shipandinsure account via registered mail.

    $50000.00 costs $55.00
    $75000.00 costs $82.50

Plus you can put 25K insurance on there from the PO for like 16 bucks. So 100K of coverage for under $100.

Significantly cheaper (and safer) than flying out there to hand deliver. There is a much better chance of you getting clubbed over the head than USPS losing your registered package insured for 25K through them.

    << <i>the DMM says 25k max insurance >>

That is their maximum indemnity, but it does not mean that they won't accept shipments worth more. When you do send packages worth more than $25K by RM, it is extremely important that you declare the true value BECAUSE if there is a claim and it turns out that you did not declare the true value, your entire claim will be denied on the basis that had they known the true value they would have handled it differently.

I think that you would still have to declare the true value to the USPS and pay the security fee. You may want to check with shipandinsure on that point too as their coverage and rates are predicated on the USPS properly handling the package.

For a submission worth more than $125K using an armored courier service is the best option other than personally delivering your coins to the PCGS office.

    I think that's true too

But the ins. co. I use wants a declared value of $0.00 so I guess I'll only ever use express mail

I see you are new here and I wonder if you wouldn't benefit from discussing your crosses. For some reason I think they may be modern NGC conditional rarities which is worth discussing before you choose to have PCGS grade them.

    Oh...and welcome!

If they are underwriting the coverage, you have to do things their way I guess.

Below is a list of the coins I'm thinking about submitting for crossover. I did not purchase them with this in mind, but the more I've read here, the more I've thought about sending them in with the stip of crossing at current grade or better. I'm assuming they have probably all been sent in previously, probably multiple times, but what the heck. PCGS is running a special on crossing through Sept. My biggest concern is getting them to PCGS. I'll post pics here when I figure out how. Thanks to all for the advice and comments.

I'd go registered with the possibility of breaking it into two packages if it helps you sleep better. Just notify PCGS of your plan.
