silverpopsilverpop Posts: 6,739 ✭✭✭✭✭
let's get away from the bad dealers and such and focus on the good dealers there are many out there so let's give them notice

well there is a local coin shop here in town the guy is very nice, knows his coins and will give you the best deal possible no BS

i buy silver dimes from him and have had no issues with him , got questions he will try and answer them to the best of his ability

As I said in another thread, if you mention a dealer giving exceptional service, mention his name and where he is located so we can give him some business if he is near where we live. The good dealers deserve some positive recognition.

If you pulled out the anecdotal hearsay stuff and the flaming, the dealer bashing threads would be short too. image

Agree, I grew up in an area in Northern , Virginia that had a few shops and had nothing but good experiences. Owners put coins on layaway for me because they knew I was a working stiff. I would get pointed to new arrivals in my series and sometimes would be handed material they had yet even inventoried. I was once in a shop and my son pulled a 1908 S indian out of the $1 box and I told him that was a mistake. So we told the owner and he sold the cent to my son for $10 for our honesty. I am amazed to walk in a show now and a couple of dealers actually recognize me, and its not like I am buying coins every time I a see them. And its not like they have to be nice either when there are plenty of other people at the show. I am afraid some of the kicking of dealers down the road has more to do with the customer, than the proprietor as there are 2 sides to every story.

John at J&J Coins in Fort Worth on Williams Rd. is a small but good coin store with fair prices. The bulk of his business is now bullion but if you need 100k in 90 percent or 100k in gold ase's he can fill the bill. He usually has a graded 55 double die Lincoln, a 3 legger and a good selection of better slabbed coins. He is working toward shutting down to a couple days a week, but has been in business since the 1980 and if he does not have it he has a good idea of where he can get it.

There are 2 more local coin stores about the same and I like them all, get along and have done a lot of business with them over the years.

    Ok here goes....

There are two B & M stores near me (near = less than 20 miles) I have dealt with and will continue to deal with both. In my opinion the positive experiences FAR out weigh the one or two negative experiences.

The two B&M's are Awesome Gifts and The Reeded Edge.

There was a guy.........Ron Sweeny (I hope I spelled his right) but he had Mid Valley Coin in the San Fernando Valley
some years back and he operated it for 25 years or so, anyhow he always had a story, these weren't 2 minute storys
as it would take him sometimes an hour to tell, and he did so with such passion that many times I visited just to hear
the latest one. You always left feeling like a million bucks.

He's gone now and I really miss this man.

I worked at a coin shop/shows from 1975-80. Great experience!

Steve Damron operates a lot in Atlanta but these days primarily runs Damron coins shop in Augusta, GA. But he travels all over to the major shows. Steve's focus is Ancients and British, based on what I've seen in his trays for the past 2.5 decades. And he's been doing business even longer than that. He runs the Augusta shop with his dad, so there's a family business. When he's not dealing, Steve used to give educational presentations at local elementary schools to get kids involved in coins. He is genuinely one of the nicest coin dealers I've ever met in my entire life. I have never had pause to question anything he tells me, because when he doesn't know the answer, he says "I don't know" or "I'll have to look that up" and he always does. He also gives great discounts at shows, especially if you buy multiple items.

Another great dealer experience has been our very own Charmy The Penny Lady and her pal Rick Snow of Eagle Eye(?) rare coins (two separate businesses, but it was one combined experience for me). My dad spent a good while chatting them up at the ANA show in February and not only did they entertain him and provide good conversation, Charmy also sold him a superb Indian head type at a great price. Really first-class people. If I was a lite side collector then I'd have bought a piece myself. They always have a great selection.

I'll have to get back with you. image OK, I've been in Don Rinkor's shop a few times and seem him at shows as well. He always has a smile and treats everybody (including me) with respect and is fair also. He can be dead tired and you can see it in his red eye-balls from traveling. Does he whine at ya? No. Does he say how tough it is? No. Matter fact he owns THREE business ventures and also attends trade shows for the other two besides coins. And some/many dealers around here tell us how tough they have it with just the coin business. BTW, Don is directly involved in his business and has employees to keep track of also. So to all the whiny dealers.......image

I deal with one local coin shop and have never had a bad experience. They are businesspeople first but will answer questions and will give discounts when warranted. They are fair with everyone as best as I know.

    Niles Coin Shop, Niles, Ill.

The best part is that they have a bid board every two weeks (3 weeks during summer) to buy and sell. It's fair and has nice collector stuff often.

Wow, this was a pretty short thread after all. image

My local shop is pretty good for coins, especially world coins compared to most US shops. The guy is always glad to see me ... but I know that's because I always buy something. And I'm fine with that.

Although the shop only offered melt for 2 70 proof buffs, the shop near where I was in MD was a good place to shop. My quirky odd amounts of individual coin supplies were handled great even while there were others in the store doing big deals. I think they just didn't handle much modern stuff as much of the store was classic and bullion.

Ive had 100% positive Coin Shop experiences since 2010 when a Dealer in Dover, Delaware tried to rip me out of about
    $3000.

I haven't been in any shops since then. The only way to have 100% good experiences. image
