'88 Topps I was 9 and had no idea how to collate cards, so I typed out the list of numbers from 1 to 792 on an old typewriter, then went through each card and marked off the number as I put them in the album. It took me forever to type out the list and to find each card on the list, and when I finally finished the set by trading with friends, the cards were all in a binder in no particular order at all. But it was fun!
1982 topps was the first complete set. I started collecting in 78' at the ripe old age of 10. My checklists were marked as well! Great topic

B. Savage, I am doing the same exact thing now with my 1978 Topps Baseball set. The only difference is that I did not type my checklist on a typewriter. I simply copied it off of the Internet and saved it on my computer.
"Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin', I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood."
My dad used to buy me packs, handfuls at a time, and taught me how to put them in order to sort them. I was four years old and have been hooked ever since.
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy! Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
After getting within about 10 cards of the set, it took a lot of buying extra packs to get those last few cards. I eventually ended up completing a 2nd set that year with all the cards from the extra packs. I still have both sets as well.
Great answer, Gregmo. I collected those trading cards as well, along with Charlie's Angels.

I am ashamed to say my first complete set was the 2014 Topps baseball set. Growing up I always tried to complete a set but never did. So I am trying to make up for lost time now.
Collecting Topps Baseball: 1966-present base sets Topps/OPC Hockey 1966-Present base sets
I don't remember if I ever completed sets when I was a kid. I think I'd remember if I did so I must not have. I first remember buying lots of packs in 1975 but have memories of opening 1973 and 74 packs and was hooked until around 1980. First full box I got was in 1980. I used to sort by team and stars back then. Used shoe boxes and rubber bands but remember getting that storage locker at some point that had the team names on card dividers but I don't think that fit a whole lot of cards.
Might have been 1986 for first complete set when I briefly returned to the hobby.
I was 9 years old and I was ready to put together my first set. After getting the 83 and 84 Topps sets for Christmas from the JC Penny's catalog, I knew it was time. The 1985 Topps set is the first set I put together and I loved it. What a great year. My first year putting together my first set and my KC Royals won the World Series! I couldn't have asked for a better gift for my birthday! Whew knew that they would never make it to a post season game EVER again!!!
<< <i>Topps Baseball 1974 Ed Kranepool was impossible to get I swear they held that card back until late August >>
That is because "Kranepool take Chico's soap and never give it back," according to the classic tell all book, "Bad Stuff About the Mets".
First set completed from packs was either 73-74 Topps Hockey or 74 Baseball. I collected 72 (8 yrs old) and 73 (yay for the Penny Candy Store at the north end of the Ocean City, NJ boardwalk for having raks) and completed them by about 1980 and 1978, respectively. First mail order was probably late 73 for the TCMA All-Time Greats that were card sized, not the postcards. I know I ordered the 75 set from Renata Galasso and may have gotten the 57-58 Hockey from Stan Martucci prior to that.

Awesome set, but one I'll probably never finish due to that pesky Funny Rings CL.
