eBay response I received after declining an offer.

I do not sell much on eBay these days, but it never ceases to amaze me the things you see. I had a graded card listed for about $16 and someone offered $7. I declined the offer, I did not include a comment. I got this response from an eBayer who has been a member since 2002 and has over 500 feedback.

"If you don't wish to work work with perspective buyers then I would suggest a buy it now price, instead of make offer. Especially since you don't want to find a middle ground with customers.

Because you didn't respond, with "I really can't take the offer but I appreciate your interest." (Which is basic business common sense 101.
I have no interest in what you have to sell.

If your response is I was offended by the offer, the offer was ridiculous. It was an offer on a baseball card. I wasn't talking bad about your family. You need to build a thicker skin skin."

You should send him a message telling him to make another offer and you will work on a middle ground. Then respond back with an offer of like $1000 or something. Pretty sure eBay will still allow you to come back with an offer higher than the outright BIN. image

Clearly you should have counteroffered $15.99.

    Hey now.

It is a shame that there are guys like that on eBay as there are plenty of good buyers and sellers out there too. I use the B/S/T forum as much as possible these days to avoid the idiots.

    Hi, Mike!

edit: here's a suggested response: "Math are hard, huh? Someone who wants sellers to find some 'middle ground' would actually start in the middle. Last time I checked, $7 was not in the middle of $16."

So much negative discourse can be avoided by using the auto-decline feature . . .

    "Perspective buyers." That's precious.

Some people so need to chill.

  • Less than 50% of what you're asking, easy decline. If I had been making an offer on a $16 card I would have offered $12 and taken my chances, but not lost my mind if declined. That guy went all Kim Jong-un after being declined however.

The response from the guy who made the offer was over the top, but I don't understand why you don't simply set things up so that offers below a certain dollar amount are automatically declined.

Especially since it appears lowball offers are offensive to you.

He didn't say the bid was offensive. He simply declined. What he found offensive was the guy's overreaction to the decline.

Maybe it would be a waste of time, but I would have replied to his response with "I didn't answer you because with an offer of less than 50% of my asking price, I didn't think that was serious. If you wish to work with sellers perhaps you should start with a reasonable offer."

Funny, this guy accuses you of having a thin skin, but he's the one who is refusing to do business with you in the future!

    Block him and move on.

A little to strong of an offer for the penny off.

I think the no response was the correct move.

Lets all block him, who needs him. PM me his info if you don't want to publicly out him
  • When I have made an offer on BIN that was declined by the seller, I don't recall even one single time where the seller included a comment with the decline notice. This guy is acting like it's common practice.*

+1. I'd block him and not think twice about it. Life is too short to deal with clowns like that.

I would have auto declined and blocked him. It's not worth the time.

I think some people are overreacting here just a bit. No doubt the perspective buyer's offer was silly. But if I were the seller I would not have been offended. I would have laughed it off and moved on. The message from the buyer indicates to me that he was serious about the card and very well may have considered and even possibly accepted a selling price much closer to what the seller was asking. Well........maybe. Anyway, despite the long ID history It wouldn't surprise me if the buyer is some teenaged kid or simply some poor soul that has seen a few too many episodes of hard core pawn or some other silly reality show where negociations are often started with a silly low ball offer just like it is.

In my short time on the bay I've found a reasonable bin works better than a high bin/OBO. That said the guy is a loon.
