Question on conservation? (modern)

jdimmickjdimmick Posts: 9,776 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just got an email from a modern submission stating that two coins in the submission are candidates for conservation. However , the grades are already noted/figured as 66's. My question, will conserving the coins have any potential in upgrading the grade of the coin(s) or no chance at all. if no chance to re-evaluate the grade, IMO, its not worth the cost to do this?

Thanks for any input

My thoughts : Eye appeal trumps most every other component in the grading room, when it comes down to the nitty gritty. And that might mean "upgrade". What does a guy have to lose ? Risk vs. Reward and I'd say one is worth the other.

    Interesting....

Is this just a plea for business, or from your recollection, are there "issues" that could be remedied by conservation? (Kind of sounds like you were surprised by the suggestion.)

I think it's more like the mechanic changing our motor oil and telling us there's a better oil filter which helps reduce the wear on the motor since more dirt is kept away from the cylinder walls. Most of us would take the better filter. It's not actually a plea for business. It's an indication that the coin "could" benefit with a slight modification. For coins , that might mean "haze" or a "spot" that can be removed, which may distract. Of course, I'm speculating without any information, only words.

PCGS regrades after the conservation process. If worthy they will upgrade.

My guess is that a "candidate for conservation" has more to do with a problem than a suggestion that dipping the coin will remove unsightly toning. But you know the coin and could better guess.

I'd call PCGS and ask what they are getting at.

The coins are "slabbable" as problem free with these "conservation opportunities"? These are "semi-problems"?
Might not the grade potentially go down if the are not in slabs first?
