Variety collectors.......what are you hitting lately?

DIMEMANDIMEMAN Posts: 22,403 ✭✭✭✭✭
You know what I mean. You see something on the bay or dealer site and you are pretty sure it is a variety. One you have been looking for for years.

When you get it in the mail and rip it open and put the glass to it.........ist a "YES" with a big arm pump..........or "CRAP" another coin to get rid of.

There for a while I was hitting about .750 then .500. Lately it's been about .150. .150 won't cut it....I would like to be at .500 at least...I can live with that.

So variety collectors chime in.image

I think I'm at .666, but I've only swung thrice online.

That probably has something to do with you looking at dollars and me looking dimes.image

I don't get to 'pick much anymore, due to what has become a VERY crowded, good and active VAM field. But I got one this afternoon.

I still had eBay bucks that were due to expire next week, so I went out hunting. Found a nice common date circ. Morgan in a PCGS holder with a silly high BIN price (relative to Greysheet that is). I offered 20% less, which was still too high in relation to Greysheet, and it was quickly accepted.

It is, of course, a popular Top 100 VAM that in this grade sells for about $75. My net cost with shipping and after eBay Bucks – $9.22. image

edited to add: Here's the coin:

I got a really nice Kennedy 1977 D FS-101 the other day. Currently being graded. Could be a top pop(tied) ms65. Fingers crossed!

Crappy photos get me every once in a while (this past week even), but mostly my batting average is high.

Sometimes I buy an eBay coin with a crappy photo knowing it's likely I'll return it, but I am haunted by the ones I didn't take a chance on that were really good.

I am laughing with you as I felt every bit of your post!

So what your really talking about is the "gambles" you take, and some that are not gambles, because your 90% sure and you will be 100% once you get it in your hand. Yeah, been there and had an amazing winter/spring run of some great coins. But after that NADA, zero, I mean, my wallet is full of dust. Finally, after months of searching (and years after this one specimen) I saw this listed for $8 BIN - it had enough showing for me to know it was a 1911 D/RPM #3. Only 1 graded by PCGS and 2 by ANACS. Its worn, its not pretty and its at PCGS now. BUT I will be shocked it it gets attributed because as you know Jon, they do not like to variety designate well worn specimens. But that is OK, I know what it is and it will help build my confidence for a score of a better example one day.

WaterSport - I think I see the RPD on the 11-D. It's actually easier for me to see it on the small pic. If it shows in hand and matches the pic in the CPG you should get your variety OK at PCGS.

Keeping my fingers crossed for ya. Let us know how it turns out.image

Working on some Flyers -- not just the CPG's, but the other minor ones. I needed a break from all of the Lincoln varieties, and with the minor ones there is no real premium attached so I'm really only in them for the coin value.

I collect dime varieties not in the CPG as well. Have several boxes of them. They are all hoping to make it to the Big Show someday and be listed in my Complete Dimes Complete Varieties Set.image

I was putting together a 7070 Type Set of varieties, but I sent in a batch of CherryPickers Vareties (and non-variety) to GreatCollections, some Top Pop, some unique to PCGS.
