Stolen Copper Coins Recovered

On July 7, 2014 the Numismatic Crime Information Center sent out an e-mail crime alert regarding the missing/stolen report of 7 early copper coins from a United States Postal Service shipment. Two days later a dealer contacted NCIC and advised that he possibly had bought coins matching the description of those stolen. Due to the quick actions of several dealer's all seven coins have been recovered.

The U.S. Postal Inspectors are conducting an on-going investigation.

I'm wondering if these were the ones gone missing from a fellow forum member/EAC dealer here that
I talked to at Summer FUN....regardless, it's very good news.

Next obvious question - did they get the thief/thieves?

EDIT: missed the part about the on-going investigation.
I collect history in the form of coins.

Nice! I hope the criminal gets time & it's well publicized. Great observation by the dealer. We'll have to make sure we don't bash him. image

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • Thanks for posting this mrearlygold. These were my coins that had gone missing from USPS Insured Registered Mail. They were being sent/returned to me. Many thanks to Doug Davis for getting the word out as soon as he did after I had notified him that something may be amiss at the Post Office - a gut feeling. The coins were located in a matter of days after my contacting Doug. These coins were very rare and of significant value. Without Doug’s quick action and the cooperation of some fellow dealers – of whom happened to be good friends and knew what I specialized in, these coins would probably have been lost to me forever. Fortunately all were found (and positively identified), but now they are in the custody of the USPS OIG as evidence pending an investigation into the theft and possible criminal action. The investigation is ongoing so I cannot convey (nor do I have access to) much information at this time except to say I at least now know where they reside - hopefully for a shorter than longer duration
    .
Doug Davis and NCIC is to be commended for his assistance and interest in helping locate the coins. I cannot thank Doug enough! What a great asset to the Numismatic community!
