rack case shipping

I've asked a few different sellers on ebay if they planned on shipping their 3 box rack cases in an overpack. Each response was something like "I can do that if you win" which means, "yes, but it will cost more".
I assumed that shipping these in an overpack was standard and I actually felt dumb even asking the question, I just wanted to make sure. Maybe it isn't standard but there's no way I'm buying one of those and risking having it go through the mail with no additional protection. And there's no way I'm buying an item when I don't know what the final shipping cost is going to be. A couple of these items were $100+ before shipping. What are your thoughts and experiences on this?

Totally agree!!! I won a rack case a while back and the seller shipped the case with NO outer box. He literally slapped a shipping label on the outside of the case box itself and dropped it in the mail. It was of course ruined by the time I received it and I sent it back for a full refund. For some irrational reason, many sellers seem to use "value" of the item as the determination of how well-protected they plan on shipping the item. As a buyer, I don't care if it's a $.99 item or a $10,000 item, I expect it to get to me it the exact same condition as it was when I won it. Whether or not it's prior to or post purchase, I contact the buyer (before paying) and confirm that they plan on shipping the case inside another box that has at least 3-4 inches of room on all sides and is stuffed on all sides with protective shipping material (peanuts, bubble wrap, etc.). This may sound like overkill, but I want to make sure that it is understood how to appropriately ship an item like that. Surprisingly, many sellers hadn't planned on using that approach when I bring it to their attention.
