US Large Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1793-1857)

raysrays Posts: 2,424 ✭✭✭✭✭
There are 143 coins in the PCGS US Large Cent registry set 1793-1857. Yesterday, with the acquisition of an S-286 1811/0 classic head cent, I completed it. It took more than a decade to find all the redbook varieties.

The toughest to find nice, were not necessarily the rarest or most valuable. Some varieties are just difficult to find that will be graded by PCGS.

Here are my list of the scarcest varieties:

1. Lettered edge wreath S-11
2. 1793 Liberty Cap
3. 1794 no fraction bar, S-64
4. 1811/0 Classic Head, S-286
5. 1798 rev of 1795 S-155
6. 1800/1798 S-191
7. 1807/6 small 7 S-272
8. 1794 Starred Reverse, S-48
9. 1823 N2 normal date
10. 1839/6 N1

The toughest to find nice, were not necessarily the rarest or most valuable. - a common theme amongst the EAC - image or is it image lol

i'm amazed to see at the least the 39/6 on the list. i don't recall seeing many nice ones since you mention it though. tons of rough ones out there.

i am actually shocked at how many nice (decent) CHLC i've seen out there after some of the statements on this forum. not easy but very doable to find. a lot were raw so perhaps they have been tampered with due to value?

so your requisite for the statement is nice and in pcgs holders. i steep hill indeed. image

ESPECIALLY with so many being cracked out submitted, sit in a collection. graded, cracked out, sit in a collection. an interesting cycle/pattern.

Congratulations! That is a wonderful accomplishment. Only 10 years? You must have been working at it pretty hard. The fact that it is middle grades....circulated coins, makes it quite impressive as well.

Thank you all for your kind words. Some of these coins got truviewed for free as they were put up on the Coinfacts website as I submitted them for certification. About half of both the early dates and the late dates I bought raw and had PCGS certify them. Some of these varities are, for all practical purposes, unavailable in PCGS holders in middle circulated grades. As an example: S-274 1807 small fraction. Although the variety is estimated as R-2, PCGS has certified only 15 total examples, including a couple of AUs, one 64, and a handful of VF and below. I would never had been able to complete the set if I bought only slabbed specimens.

Nice set rays , I can appreciate the hard work that goes into a set like this. I am currently #3 in the half cent
major varieties ( with no hope of improving to #2 or #1 ) , but the thrill it provides to find something in the wild
    is worth the ride.

Congrats on a great accomplishment! I know exactly what you mean about finding the varieties in the wild and not being able to just buy PCGS coins. You have to get them where ever you can find them including other slabs as well.

Now you can help me with my 650 coin set!imageimage

That is a truly remarkable accomplishment. Which of the coins is your favorite? I'd nominate the 1794 starred reverse cent but that's my nomination. It's more significant which one you pick as the favorite.
