So, PCGS does grade counterfeit coins!

Yes, this could be old news, but it's new to me:
1848 Small Date Large Cent counterfeit
I don't know much about this piece, other than that there are about 10 known.
While PCGS calls it a 'Fantasy', all counterfeits are 'Fantasy' pieces.
I wonder what other 'exceptions' PCGS will make?
Maybe PCGS should begin grading/holdering contemporary counterfeits!
Edited to add: You could also say the 1804 Electrotype Bust Dollar is a counterfeit too...although some suggest it was Mint Made around 1860.

There are a number of collectors that focus on these as well as other counterfeits. It would be interesting to see if PCGS expands their certification of these pieces. I think it would be interesting if they started slabbing Omegas for instance.

Evidently they do with the right numismatic pedigree since 5 of this one have been graded.
Is there hope for the DCARR Peace Dollars?

<< <i>Considering that the original counterfeits could themselves be counterfeited today, I'd say it's a good thing that PCGS offers this service. >>

Are the original counterfeits being counterfeited today?
Also, what's to stop any original counterfeit from being counterfeited?
But that being said, PCGS should provide a new "Genuine" code for counterfeit.

I think the concept of "historical significance" probably comes into play....
And since I just turned 50, and quite frankly I'm history, I'm going with 50 years.
