So, PCGS does grade counterfeit coins!

Yes, this could be old news, but it's new to me:

1848 Small Date Large Cent counterfeit
I don't know much about this piece, other than that there are about 10 known.

While PCGS calls it a 'Fantasy', all counterfeits are 'Fantasy' pieces.
I wonder what other 'exceptions' PCGS will make?
Maybe PCGS should begin grading/holdering contemporary counterfeits!

Edited to add: You could also say the 1804 Electrotype Bust Dollar is a counterfeit too...although some suggest it was Mint Made around 1860.

The Machin's Mills half pennies are counterfeits and the Scovill Mfg Fugios are in a similar area IMO.

There are a number of collectors that focus on these as well as other counterfeits. It would be interesting to see if PCGS expands their certification of these pieces. I think it would be interesting if they started slabbing Omegas for instance.

Evidently they do with the right numismatic pedigree since 5 of this one have been graded.

Is there hope for the DCARR Peace Dollars?
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Considering that the original counterfeits could themselves be counterfeited today, I'd say it's a good thing that PCGS offers this service.

Are the original counterfeits being counterfeited today?

Also, what's to stop any original counterfeit from being counterfeited?

There probably is a distinction between the terms certification and authentication. PCGS and Collecting Universe provide a service to collectors that certify the condition and creator of collectible items. When it comes to coins and currency, they certify the condition and creator (as applicable) but do not necessarily certify that is legal tender. IMHO their certification of certain "counterfeit" items is appropriate as a service to their client base who may wish to collect these items.

But that being said, PCGS should provide a new "Genuine" code for counterfeit.

How old does a counterfeit have to be before it heals?

I think the concept of "historical significance" probably comes into play....

And since I just turned 50, and quite frankly I'm history, I'm going with 50 years. image
