Stuff to do in Cooperstown?

Finally making the pilgrimage to the shrine with my son this weekend. Unfortunately, it's just for the day and we leave the next morning. Is that enough time to enjoy both the museum and the town? I haven't collected in a while, but I'm sure there's a shop or two my son would love to visit while we're there. Besides the museum, what else is interesting in Cooperstown? Thx.

Length of the museum depends on how engaged you are with the history of the game and the age of your son. You can spend as little a couple hours or a good portion of the day educating your son on the game. Make a stop at the Doubleday Café for a bite to eat and there is a card shop right across the street. That is about all to do in Cooperstown unless you're into Opera. There is plenty of youth ball in the surrounding area if you're looking to kill some time. Many of the teams are from different countries and there are teams from all over the U.S. Enjoy, it is truly an amazing adventure for baseball enthusiasts.

The Ommegang Brewery is in Cooperstown, if you like beer.

I'm sure there more than 2 but that's all I remember. But ether way you will have cards to look through.
Have fun if you do go.

Ommegang has a nice new little bar on main street now.

But one of my favorite things to do is just 5 miles out of town....Glimmerglass State Park. GREAT place. Nice beach, BBQ, Volleyball, walking trails. All kinds of room to throw a ball or frisbee. Lots of shade trees around the BBQ pits and picnic tables. You can even rent kayaks.

There are also a couple other museums. There is the Fenimore Art Museum. Depending on what they have showing, it can be very good or very boring. Then there is the Farmers Museum. Really nicely done. Worth checking out. Both the Art Museum and the Farmers Museum are down by the Otsego Hotel and Golf Course.

About 6-7 miles on the other side of Lake Otsego is the Glimmerglass Opera House if you like opera. Not me. But its draws sell out crowds all the time.

Not sure what direction you are coming from to be able to tell you what other stuff is near. If you want to travel another 30 miles, there are the Howe Caverns and the Secret Caverns. If you are travelling on I-88 then you are really close.

I think on Saturdays, just outside of Cooperstown in Milford, you can catch a train ride robbery. Pretty fun. Nice scenic train ride with an old time cowboys robbing the train. If you look it up online, I think its called the Charlotte Valley Railroad.

Thanks for all the tips, folks. We had a great time. My son's 11 so I was worried that he'd might be bored of the museum after a short time, but as it turned out, he was fascinated. Wounded up spending close to 4 hrs in there before breaking over to the Doubleday cafe for lunch. Spent the rest of the day checking out all the stores and even caught a game at Doubleday field. Almost every shop we stopped in sold cards. Nothing really to write home about and all were a bit overpriced, but that was expected. Picked up a couple of nice caps and other trinkets though.

All in all, worth the trip. We're already planning for the next one.
