Ebayer to avoid: Jakeben....rewrapped wax packs/boxes

Facts...purchased 1977 "unopened" topps wax box on 07/07/2013.

I wasn't very educated in vintage and spending a lot of money then. Didn't know bbce authenticated boxes until late last yr and life happens. This box was one that came back def rewrapped per steve/ bbce. I sent a nice note to Jakeben stating the facts. Knowing it was way over the 30 or 60 days but hopeful he'd do something to make it right. Maybe it was an honest mistake or selling for someone else. My fault it took so long. Received a nasty "too bad" reply "I'm not doing anything about it" and more so "what are you going to do" live and learn.

Lost some money, learned a lesson but hope to save some of guys from repeating my mistake.

sorry to hear that Steelernation. It pays to buy from legit seller on these things. Keep the box and burn the wrappers

Traverse unopened terrain long enough and someone will get you. Or at the very least, a grave attempt will be made. So take solace in the fact that you're not alone on this one.

It appears as if you have the proper attitude moving forward, and that's half the battle. Thanks for the heads-up, and like 1954 said, sorry this happened to you.

When I was helping Rick, RoseInThe Hall, with his unopened boxes a few months ago we had a bad 77 baseball box. Steve at BBCE said there were a lot of homemade 77 baseball boxes. Someone had a roll of original wrappers and was making packs and boxes. His box may have came from the same source as this box.

  • Hey, thanks guys. Appreciate it.

I know there are guys on here who wouldn't give us a heads up and actually enjoy the misery or misfortune of others. who wants to be like them.
They are far outnumbered by the good guys. I'm way over the lost money. Just hoping to help others here who have helped me. The spirit of the board.

Actually, submitted around 12-13 boxes to steve and "only" 3 came back bad. One from a reputable auction house.

..and def don't want Jakeben to continue.

I remember it well. Was about 6-7 years ago.

Are some of those known to be in graded holders?

Yes, there were a number holdered by GAI in the newer flips, almost all of which were graded GAI 9 or 9.5.

Call me cautious, but the instances where I would buy unopened on ebay or in an auction house are very rare.

The ebayer who fabricated those '77 wax packs was Import_Export_Co out of the Burbank/Glendale area back in '09. Import_Export_Co also had seven additional ebay user ID's that was used to fabricate and sell vintage wax packs. At that time it was mentioned by a fellow board member that Import_Export_Co was operated by the Hogobian brothers but whether the Hogobian brothers did in fact run the business was never substantiated publically on this board. For the record Import-Export_Co purchased all their original 1977 Topps uncut wrapper rolls from ebayer (redvalleyforge).

Just some details that popped into my mind from years ago--but then again I've been told I have a good eye for detailsimage

The people responsible for fabricating all those '77 packs out of Glendale, Ca. They sold these packs on ebay using the ID of (Import_Export_Co.). This was just one of eight ebay user ID's that they used to fabricate and sell vintage wax packs. For the record they purchased all their original 1977 Topps uncut wrapper rolls from ebayer (redvalleyforge).

I'll second that notion! Hope all is well, Summer!

  • When you play with fire you always get burned! Hopefully you paid with a major credit card and can chargeback the purpose under fraudulent pretenses. This is exactly why I don't mess with wax boxes! Your always better to just flat out buy the card your looking for already graded by PSA/BGS/SGC, whatever.
  • Import_Export_Co. during this same period also fabricated a substantial amount of '78 Topps baseball wax and much of it found its way into Gai holders as well. And the wrappers were also obtained from original factory rolls sold once again by ebayer redvalleyforge.

As Import_Export_Co's confidence began to grow with the success of their bad '77 & '78 packs they became greedy and begin making small amounts of early 70's and mid to late '60's wax baseball. But in doing so they caught the attention of a certain pack detective who used to roam these boards years ago. And it was on one evening in particular back in '09 when Import-Export-Co threw a hand-made '68 topps football wax pack on ebay that their world came tumbling down and they were exposed on this board that very night. And within an hour of that exposure Import_Export_Co cancelled all their vintage wax listings along with all their additional wax listings they had listed using one of their other eight ebay aliases--WorldTradeCo.

  • Summerof68,

Any links to that whole debacle? Would be very interesting and educational.

Btw...mine was a whole 1977 box and steve was "the entire box" was bad. Blatantly obvious.

This is old news that took place back in the spring of '09. That same year Steve Hart wrote in his blog that he estimated, "75% of the raw vintage unopened material on ebay was resealed garbage".

And considering the recent huge price spikes in vintage unopened that 75% figure quoted by Steve years ago might even be higher today!!

I have bought probably 125 to 150 unopened boxes off of Ebay in the last 8 or 9 months most of which I sent to BBCE for authentication. Within the last month or so I had 3 bad boxes. I would say 3 out of 150 is doing pretty good.

Not sure about post 1980 product, but in my experience, the vast majority of 70s raw wax sold on ebay is no good or resealed..

not sure what to make of this statement. inflammatory? why not just recognize those who represent the good in this forum, unless you'd like to offer a few examples of those who jump for joy over the failures of forum members.

buying unopened on eBay requires more than just a loaded PayPal account. it requires skill and research. time spent learning. and good communication with other people here.

    condolences on your bad box.

I remember those 1977 and 1978 wax packs floating around both raw and in the GAI holders. It seemed to me that they produced much more 1977 wax packs though. The wax packs looked really good too since the wrappers were right off the roll.

Hey there Mike. Just thought I'd check in and see how the unopened hobby is faring--pretty darn good I'd say. Funny, it really doesn't seem that long ago when you could pick up a '79 Topps baseball wax tray on ebay for under $30--I guess those days are long gone.

Always looking forward to viewing some pictures of some great vintage racks & cellos. I love to analyze pictures of packs.
