Crusty 1873 CC Trade $1 just arrived in today's mail (updated 8/22 with grade posted in post 10)

This just came in today's mail. It popped up on Ebay last Friday morning as a BIN or BO. From the seller's crappy pics (see below) I could see that it had at least XF details and looked the right color. It also had a wide CC (well, not the 1.2mm wide one), complete with the die crack under the left wing. There were a couple of minor rim issues evident, but nothing to prevent me from pushing the button. I hit the Buy It Now rather than risking someone else from this board snagging it while the seller mulled over my offer. The BIN price was pretty dang good for a 73-CC anyway.

The surfaces look pretty nice to me. No hairlines and lots of crust in the protected areas. There is some purple toning to go along with the gray when you rotate the coin under bright light. The only negs are the rim dings, but they detract very little from it. The one at 10:00 on the reverse is probably the worst, and it doesn't even make it to the reeds. My pics aren't the greatest, but here it is.

For all those naysayers who preach the anti-Ebay mantra, keep it up! Oh, I almost forgot - this is what I spent my Ebay Bucks on this quarter.
Cheers!

    Nice coin

Not a die crack but a clash under the wing
Not the premium having super rare 1.2mm wide CC but the only pretty rare 1.0mm CC which doesn't often command extra. There is a rare die combination that has the MPD obv die that has a 7 in the denticals under the date. That die PCGS will attribute as MPD FS-301 and coupled to that rev might draw a very substantial premium of about double.

PCGS xf 40 in its future if they don't over penalize the diagnostic weak leg strike, VF35 if they do.

<< <i>A real tough die marriage and sweet looking to boot! Congrads on a great get! >>

He never mentioned which die marriage it is? And those pictures aren't good enough to tell. What are you referring to?

Anyway if your coin has this obv die it really escalates your find

<< <i>I was under the assumption that the 1.0 wide '73-cc was a very tough coin and that is without the "7" in the dentils. >>

That would be an assumption for sure. The 1.0mm isn't that rare, yes all 73cc are scarce but the 1.0mm comes up a few times every year although mostly in low grades. I have owned a few myself but never with the MPD. That said I have the MPD FS301 with multiple other Rev dies so it has never been a priority of mine.

That's a sweet buy for a great price. It's too bad the coin was listed in the wee hours of the morning (for me). I don't see much chance of the coin getting into an XF holder even though it is a true XF, but even grading out as a 35 you're doing well.

Nice one! Any 73-CC is a scarce coin, looks like a nice wholesome 35 or 40.

FWIW - Just got it back today. VF35 was the final grade. I was hoping for 40, but I think the small rim dings on the rev at 10:00 may have caused it to be net graded down a notch. Thanks for all of your comments.

I snagged the PCGS VF-30/CAC from NEN this spring; had I passed on that and then known of this one, there would have been a serious battle. image
