Thematic Investing related to PM's.

I bumped across this term a little bit ago and not knowing the definition or application of thematic investing, decided to dig a little deeper. I may not have the correct interpretation of the investing style (which if I don't, please, someone who does feel free to correct me), but I was wondering if their are investors who consider themselves thematic investors in PM's. What would a thematic PM portfolio look like? (again, if I have the concept wrong, please feel free to correct me).

Thematic investing, which entails purchasing a group of stocks based on a single theme, represents a viable way to structure a portion of your equity portfolio.

Old approach, new name. Not much different than purchasing a mutual fund or an ETF focusing on one sector.

A PM portfolio for miners might look similar to the components of GDX or GDXJ, or might include metal specific items such as SLV, GLD, PLT, etc. The modern "thematic" investor can find many prepackaged themes in ETFs. ETFs are like modern day mutual funds, but trade with the ease of stocks. An ETF investor must know if his ETF is backed by physical metal/physical shares or if it is a leveraged bet. Both can serve a purpose if this is understood.

I consider myself a "thematic" PM investor - almost every time I step outside the PM box I get my boxers handed to me. image

Take a look at the ETF Database website for some ideas on "themes"
