Not one peep of the late Tony Gwynn was made during the All-Star Game? Weak. :(

EstilEstil Posts: 6,920 ✭✭✭✭
I didn't actually watch the All-Star Game but I did read about (and I can honestly not believe this) that Tony Gwynn, who died just about a monthish prior was not even mentioned during yesterday's ASG. No pre-game tribute, no moment of silence, no jersey in the dugout, NOTHING. They give Derek Jeter at the ASG all the pageantry in the world but not one peep to one of the game's all-time greatest hitters. How sad.

I second that big time !!!!!!!!!!!

Tony was a big part of the ASG with Ted Williams when a BB hero was honored.

Tony played the game and lived his life with total class.......as much or more so as Jeter

(I am a big Jeter and Yankee fan) saying that.

A moment of silence was the very least thy should have done.

A black arm band even nicer.

Come to think of it, you are right. I watched the first half of the game and don't remember any mention of him. What a glaring omission! And baseball really prides itself on its history, too.

Pretty lame for all baseball fans, especially Padre fans.

At least the Padres know how to do him justice! Not sure what else they could do for him, other than maybe start monuments for both him and Ray Kroc?

You guys expected Fox to sacrifice five seconds that they could use to remind everyone that this was Jeter's final All-Star Game? Are you insane?

Mike Trout, you've been the best player in baseball for the last three years, and you've just won your first All-Star Game MVP. So tell us...what's it like to play with Derek Jeter's incandescent glow for 4 innings?

Imagine the attention a failed starting pitcher would receive for something like this last year.

During the HR derby they mentioned both Kiner and Gwynn.....but yes they should have mentioned them at the game. Both were greats and class acts.

I wondered about this as well and thought about it before the game. Especially with all his ASG appearances and infectious positive personality/love of the game. A glaring omission indeed.

I realize Jeter deserves recognition for a wonderful career, but it got a bit much for me.

It would have been nice to honor Gwynn and Kiner.

Seems like the media really focus' on one story at a time and often over does it.

HERE is a Yahoo story about the slight. I guess you have to be a Yankee to get mentioned on national TV anymore. No mention of Gwynn or any other MLB greats that passed like Kiner, Don Zimmer, etc.
Fox made a statement that basically said they didn't want to slight anyone by singling out just one person (Hello? The whole freaking game was a three hour tribute to Derek Jeter.)

This garbage of "farewell tours" these past two years is obnoxious beyond words. I agree both Mariano and Jeter were greats, but letting everyone know this will be the final year so all this pomp and circumstance can take place is inappropriate. Meanwhile, a great player and man is no longer with us, and he gets mentioned during the HR derby apparently- an event plagued by a sportscaster and his catch phrases that lost their appeal in 2001.

Fox, ESPN, all of them and are too busy with self promotion and ratings than caring about the ones that help put the game where it is.

True, in a coaching capacity, but I can't help but remember him as the Flubs' manager. I think most folks got my point. He also played for Chicago.

The All-Star break was basically an extended Derek Jeter lovefest. I thought they were going to use the 7th inning stretch to do something about Tony Gwynn. Guess not and obviously everybody else noticed that too.

They did an okay job with covering Tony Gwynn. They gave him some coverage during the Home Run Derby and a great piece during the pregame coverage. I don't think it needs to be covered much more than that.

Why wouldn't Fox Sports One count? I watched the coverage on Fox Sports One and I watched the Home Run Derby - both had memorials. I'm not trying to defend Fox's coverage, because, quite frankly, it was terrible, but they deserve a bit of credit for putting together multiple pieces for Tony Gwynn.

I don't hate him; I do think he's overrated though...and if he's not a Yankee he doesn't get three hours of love at the ASG.
I'm also not a SD fan... but think Gwynn should at least have been mentioned.
Oh...and Fox Sports One isn't necessarily available in all markets so a good many people never saw any mention of Tony G....assuming anyone even watched their pregame show.
The place for a tribute should have been on the main Fox broadcast. Just a nice video package or something. Didn't have to be long.

I have nothing against the Jeter tributes at all...he was a fine class act ballplayer. But at the same time completely leaving out Tony Gwynn (and also as it turns out Ralph Kiner) and not mentioning him in any during the ASG coverage proper was just plain wrong.

Classy comment by Joe Torre about Tony, in his HOF induction speech today.

Joe mentioned being at the tribute to Tony in San Diego, and watching a video of Tony saying that he always tried to play the game "the right way". Joe then continued by urging the players of today and tomorrow to do the same, and respect the game.

Fox Sports is horrible and I believe has set the sport backwards. Just wait until they get a hold of golf next year on USGA events -- Fox is a 2nd rate sports channel...

Don't know if there was any reference to Tony Gwynn at the HOF ceremony Sunday, as I did not see the ceremony. But if they did not mention him it would of been a dishonor, considering his passing was only a few weeks ago.

Pretty sure the HOF always acknowledges HOFers who pass away during the calender year. They did so yesterday with both Gwynn and Kiner.

Is that the Padres' official Gwynn monument/statue? Well just the base looks about the sameish size as one of those Yankee Stadium monuments on its side right?

Maybe they could do like Ray Kroc and keep his initials in black letters on one of the jersey sleeves for the next three years or so (they really did that for Ray, no joke).
