RC sells for $4999 and SMR has it valued at $3000

PSA Gem mint 10 OPC Mario Lemieux rookie sells for $4999 on EBAY and has a value in SMR of $3000. Checked SMR again the next morning and PSA had already bumped it up to $3500+. Why not bump it up to the actual selling price of $4999?

I think a better question would be why are you even looking at SMR to check prices?
  • Easy, my entire collection is Mario Lemieux. I keep up with all prices swings of both of his rookie cards Topps & OPC in PSA Gem mint 10 condition. Basically, I keep in tune with the value of my high end cards and make sure PSA is as well keeping up with them. When the price peeks I can sell off some of the cards if I want to. What is surprising me is now that the wax is supposedly drying up the value of the high end cards are going up with them. I watched the OPC go from $1500 3 years ago to now $4999.

So because SMR is 3500 you think that's all you can get for yours despite the recent sale for 4999?

SMR is a complete waste of time if you want accurate values. The few times I have looked up cards they are ridiculously low on the high grade examples of the cards I collect.

Ebay's completed auctions are the way to go to see what things are selling for.

+1....there are certain cards I would LOVE to get at SMR prices!! There are also certain cards I would LOVE to sell at SMR prices if there are any takers! SMR is just supposed to be a guide, and loosely interpreted at that. There are more accurate guides out there.
  • Not hockey but a related story

I stopped in a comic store and ended up picking up some silver age comics as a treat (I do cards I promise)
The guy actually went in eBay and priced the books based on completed sales and grade. I will say it was the most refreshing transaction with a dealer of any kind I've had in a while. I saved on tax and even got a few bucks off for a bundled price (5 comics).

My point... Actual sales, via eBay or any market, or VCP is the best way to go, IMO.

  • As a collector for years I am totally aware that SMR is just a guide pretty much fore the novice collector. But with that said you need a starting point for values. Under Ebay's completed listings is where you will get a true reference point to find out the most recent prices. For me, I keep up with the values and trends on any high dollar card I have. I Just thought it was interesting to see how PSA 10 card prices on some players because of the limited wax available have spiked up in value quickly.

This example sold for $4,999. It doesn't mean the next one will sell for that amount. The SMR attempts to take this logic into consideration. I have seen countless cards get snagged at high buy it now's and in auction not even get close to that number. On the flip side there are numerous examples of cards that sell with the top two bids being 50 to 100% higher then the pack. Once again it attempts to take this into consideration.

The market decides the price and I highly doubt most are making their purchase decisions based on the SMR pricing. I send Joe updates periodically throughout the year on the Wrestling All Stars and if you look at the liner notes you will see cards that sold for 10 fold what the pricing lists. If you read the link I posted it explains their pricing strategy and I think in general most of their thought process is sound.

If you want real time data it is easy to find which is obviously the best gauge of what is happening in the market place.

I am a little surprised people are pushing back at the OP. IMHO PSA needs to pay more attention and focus on the guide more.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the SMR. It can be off by anywhere from 10% to 10,000% in either direction. Use prior sales and your own knowledge to determine the value of a card. For your reference, here are all the recorded sales for this particular card over the past 7 years:

    6/12/14 BIN $4,999.99
    12/1/13 BIN $4,450.00
    9/28/12 Best Offer $3,100.00
    5/13/12 $2,650.00
    4/6/12 $2,820.00
    11/11/11 $2,425.00
    10/27/11 BIN $2,800.00
    6/14/11 BIN $2,499.98
    10/7/09 $1,390.03
    12/14/08 $2,516.85
    7/7/08 $2,225.00
    2/5/08 $1,825.00
    6/12/07 $2,805.05
    4/27/07 $2,185.20
    4/12/07 $2,425.00

    SMR is a total joke.

I have purchased cards at $350 and had many bidders for that card and similar situations.

    SMR said $30

VCP is great, but beware. I am not convinced that the sells for 4SC, Probstein, PWCC and alike really transpire 100% of the time. There are some "inflating" techniques being used by all of them, in my humble opinion. So, when 4sc sells a 1979 opc ryan psa 9 for $424 and then two weeks later joeblow sells a psa 9 opc ryna for $85, it makes hard to believe that the $424 really ever happened. So if you have vcp look up the sell of opc Nolan ryan's psa 9's for 1978 - 1981 and you will see what I mean.

I am not trying to throw these guys totally under the bus, because obviously they are selling a ton of stuff, but I feel more confident in the pricing of items if you see a couple of regular sellers getting the same prices.

If the person who bought that card for $4999 doesn't pay (by prior agreement or otherwise) is that price still logged as a sale price by VCP?

The 1982 Topps Traded Ripken in PSA 10 has been hovering around $1000 to $1200, but one just sold from PWCC for $1913.

    It happens.

The market fluctuates, and many factors can change the value of any given graded card (eye appeal, etc.).

I've been following the grades on the OPC Lemieux and Gretzky rookies pretty closely for a bit now. The OPC Gretzky's in the PSA 7+ range started jumping quickly a few months ago and the Lemieuxs are now doing the same. I'm hoping to start seeing the same action on Yzerman and Brett Hull.
  • There was a guy here years ago (Shagrotn) ?? who bought a Gretzky rookie on ebay for WAY UNDER the going price. I believe he bought
his for two grand when the card was easily selling around $3,500.

Should the SMR have dropped the Gretzky rookie down to $2000.00 from $3,500.00 just because of Shagrotn's deal he got ?

It sold but was it paid for? Let's put it this way, without acting like I'm card guru, I am 99% positive that 5-10% of these sales are never paid for.

Jeff, let's say you have your hand on or you know where you can get a dozen or more of these PSA 10's, it makes sense that they need to sell for a lot more every now and again. A lot people gauge their pricing on these so called sells on ebay. So if there is a way to manipulate these sells, someone will do it.

Check and see if joeblow sells one for $2,000 and then I will start believing.

And so is ebay pricing....often people never pay for the card or even bid high in order to bring prices higher for their cards....so ebay is the joke...

The SMR lists the 1994 SP die-cut Arod at $10,000 in PSA 10. Any takers?
