1990-91 Pro Set Hockey Questions

Hi All,

Mostly because I'm usually broke but I still love the rush of opening packs, I decided to open a few boxes of 90-91 Pro Set Hockey that a local dealer had for $2 per box - hoping to find some of the more rare variations. I checked out the link to a pretty extensive checklist on a previous post, printed it out, and started ripping.

I didn't find any of the real gems that I've seen sell on eBay, but did find a few of these (descriptions from checklist):

39a Brad McCrimmon (#4 on front, Trade stripe)(U)
118b Wayne Gretzky (large gap in stat line – looks like white square)(R)
120a Steve Kasper (comma between S and T in STEVE on front)(R)
169a Alexei Kasatonov (“rookie” in text – full quotes around word)(U)
169b Alexei Kasatonov (“rookie” in text – quote marks partially airbrushed)(U)
271a Gordie Roberts (clipped stat lines) (U)
290a Gilles Thibaudeau (broken, jagged stat lines on back)(R)
385b Ceglarski/Lester Patrick (blue K in PATRICK on front, number on back)(R)

I was wondering if any of these are worth anything. That is, would it be worth buying his remaining boxes? I don't collect hockey, I just love to rip junk wax in hope of finding something I can sell to pay for my next rip.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Think. Thank. Thunk.

There are only a few of the errors that seem to be targeted by the higher paying Pro Set collectors, even if some of the variations you mention are just as rare. If you're bored and have enough spare time, list some of them on ebay auction starting at something like $0.50. Sell 4 and you paid for the whole box! Maybe someone will bid them higher and then it will show whether they have any unexpected value or not.

You'll find a few of those variations listed in completed ebay auctions. They didn't sell and the seller had them listed for about a buck. The McCrimmon and Kastonovs were easy to find. I'm no help on the others.

I couldn't find the previous thread with the link to the variations. Can somebody find that link?

Thanks guys, the ones I couldn't find anything on were the Gretzky, Kasper, Thibaudeau and Patrick... maybe I'll just throw 'em on eBay and see what happens.

HERE is the link to the list.

Are there many variations in the 1991-92 pro set?

    I'm not really sure.

I know there were a lot of variations in the 90-91 Pro Set hockey, as well as both the 90 and 91 Pro Set football. Beyond that, I'm flying blind. The site that I posted a link to seems to list quite a few different sets that have variations.
