Just a comment. I appreciate all the pos./neg. posted information about the grading "game". It assists me in determining which direction to consider going in as far as submissions go. What to look for in grades, modern, vintage, etc.

So by posting it 3 times here and you started another thread will make things better?
I'll give you a pat on the back and tell you things are going to be okay buddy. Just take a deep breath and go ahead and let it all out.
In the end, you have to tell yourself that there is no GOD, and you're just not looking at your cards close enough.
If you feel the need to post the results 7 more times and complain a little harder....then (waving)

I understand how you feel. Recently I had a 104 card submission yielding no 10s (posted below). I was pretty sure at least 10% would get 10.

When the grades came in I was pretty upset until I had them in hand and compared them to the only two tens I have (from a different sub). There's clearly a difference in the cards. I can detect something on all of the 9s but nothing on the 10s.

When I compare my 9s to 10s on eBay my cards blow those out of the water condition-wise.

The thing is, these cards are for my personal collection and I want no sympathy 10s. If there's something wrong I expect them to give me a 9.

Is PSA getting tougher on grades ( in particular 10s)? I hope so.

HOWEVER, what is most alarming about my sub is that there are zero .5 grades out of 41 8s. This is a red-flag that something isn't right.

Great point on the .5s. There are definitely graders who do not use them, which begs the question; why? There are also graders who will 8.5 you to death at the expense of 9s, so personally, I kind of like the no .5 routine.

That said, humans grade and humans vary, no matter how much we wish they didn't or expect them to conform.

As the mini folks here know, I broke a beautiful case of 75 minis several years back, submitting close to 1700 cards across three subs.

    Sub 1 - roughly 1% 10s, even split between 8s and 9s and few 7s.
    Sub 2 - roughly 1% 10s, even split between 8s and 9s and few 7s.
    Sub 3 - no 10s, 10% 9s, even split between 7s and 8s.

Exact same case, same break, everything the same. In today's dollars, you are talking about roughly 20k in raw cards plus fees for that third sub and it was nearly worthless. I lost my mind. Without getting into details, I reached out to Joe and to his credit, in the end he listened. As a result, I still sub to this day, but live in fear of the infamous GoD.

Lastly, to be fair, there is definitely a GoL element in play as well and I have been lucky enough to cross his desk with a few orders over the years as well.

Its been repeated above and in other threads but grading remains subjective. It also remains true that there are many cards that are graded 9 that would fit nicely in a 10 older. Also consider:

    1. Take 50 of your cards and grade them. Write the grades down. Let them sit for six months and repeat the process. I guarantee your grades will change on a good number of the cards. Such really illustrates the nature of grading.

    2. It would seem to me that human nature would be "I can't give all of these cards a 10" when a large submission comes in. "There is simply no way all can be 10s." That is an inherent mentality that is probably impossible to overcome. The grader does not know, for example, you went through 12,000 cards in a case and only submitted the "50 best." Perhaps the best way to minimize this hit is to do as others suggest and make smaller submissions (which, to me, is difficult to do since PSA specials are based on larger number submissions).

    3. Imagine sitting in a darkened room looking at cards for eight hours a day as a full time job. I love cards as much as the next person but the simple fatigue and focus has to be extremely difficult to manage. That in turn can impact grades because lets be honest-- graders are human and will be impacted by various outside factors (sinus headache, stress at home, etc.) like all of us. That in turn can very well impact grades.

    4. 10s are difficult. Very difficult. We all know they carry very high premiums. If they are handed out like candy, the premium of 10s will be lowered. Even so, we have all seen 10s where we can take exception to some imperfection on the card. In my view, I can only conclude the difference between a 9 and a 10 is highly discretionary and subjective.

If anything, what puzzles me the most from this and other threads is the dearth of .5 grades. I simply do not understand why PSA made the push for change to this .5 grading scale (for the record, I was not in favor of it happening) yet now seems to give it an after thought. I have seen many 8s that, if not passing as 9s, should at least receive the .5 bump.

At the end of the day, breathe and remember grading is subjective. There will be margins of difference; we should only really be alarmed if our expectations are consistently 2 or 3 grades higher than what we are receiving (if they are, you are not "calibrated" right to the PSA system). If you submit cards expecting 10s, you do have to realize many will most likely get 9s (see above). If you hit a high percentage of 9s when submitting expecting 10s, I would say your "PSA calibration" is accurate but your expectations are not.

    My half cent.

Great post. I've graded thousands of raw vintage cards for a shop over the years and I can tell you that your grades will vary slightly day to day, especially after you are doing it for 2+ straight hours. One day those touches on the corners look EX, the next day they don't seem bad at all and hit closer to Ex+ or Ex-Mt. Then there are times you look back at your "EX" pile, and you wonder what you were thinking that day.

The one thing we rarely get are scans of the cards graded by the grader of death. Post up some scans so some people here can let you know if you are missing something.

The number of 10's I have received has increased ever since I started using a loupe and really really going over each card before subbing.

I had a similar experience with my 1969 set. I subbed it in blocks. The set was built card-by-card by me using consistent quality requirements before adding a card to my set. Most blocks I subbed had a distribution of roughly 25% 9s, 70% 8s and 5% 7 or lower (occasional 5/6 due to a missed light surface wrinkle). One block received about 75% 7s and 25% 8s. Similarly, I was able to get the worst undergrades reviewed and many bumped, one from a 7 to a 9. I think there are just cases where either a grader has a really bad day or there's a grader who hits cards particularly hard. I hope PSA periodically retests their graders over time to make sure their standards don't drift too much after reviewing thousands of cards.

    Top right particularly.

For what it is worth, I own a loupe, but no longer use it. Too easy to talk yourself out of subbing cards. Since I switched to a jewelers magnified lamp I am much more consistent and successful with my subs.

As someone who has had a 6 bump to a 10 after cracked out, I have learned to accept the frustration and embrace the theory of "If the grade does not fit, then you must resubmit". In spite of the added expense.

    << <i>

<< <i>if your business model dictates that you need to get back cards graded as perfect, then your model is wrong. Just cause you have a large submission doesn't mean you deserve the wrong grade. Graders should grade based on the merits of each card, not the size of the order. >>

If you submit 500 cards in March and they grade 80% 8s vs submitting 500 cards in July and they grade 60% 9s, then that isn't the fault of the submitter. Basically what you are saying is nobody should be submitting modern cards since most are worthless in lower than 10 grade. I don't think this is the message PSA wants to convey to their customers. For the record, I don't submit post-1980 cards, so my model doesn't require PSA 10s. >>

I used to send in 2000-card submissions (all pre-1980) until a few years ago until this kind of thing started becoming the norm. Now I probably send in 50-100 cards in a year that have been very carefully examined and I seem to be getting results that are a lot more consistent and meeting expectations.

Grading is still just too "human-intensive" and subjective. A lot of technology exists that could really help PSA get things more consistent. At such time as they decide to go down that path I think they will see a decent pick-up in submission levels from those of us who will no longer tolerate mass grading using a less than state-of-the-art methodology.

As someone who has had a 6 bump to a 10 after cracked out, I have learned to accept the frustration and embrace the theory of "If the grade does not fit, then you must resubmit". In spite of the added expense.

    Well said. Text

I always write down what grade I am expecting before sending the cards away. Then I compare with the actual grades received.
The correlation on last sub was about 80%. There were a couple head scratchers that were 3 grades too low and some 10's that only received 9's.
Some were higher than expected by one grade. No .5 grades were received.

<< <i>That in turn can impact grades because lets be honest-- graders are human and will be impacted by various outside factors (sinus headache, stress at home, etc.) like all of us. >>

Hmmm ... so MAYBE it would be a good idea to try to have your cards graded the next business day after Valentine's Day!

    << <i>Top right particularly.

For what it is worth, I own a loupe, but no longer use it. Too easy to talk yourself out of subbing cards. Since I switched to a jewelers magnified lamp I am much more consistent and successful with my subs. >>

Would you mind posting a picture of that lamp and maybe a few details? I searched 'jewelers magnified lamp' on eBay and got lots of different items. I'd like to know more so that I can look into purchasing one. Thank you.

Card graders might just be a bit more frustrated the day after Valentine's Day than most, so you may actually have a greater chance of finding the G.O.D.

    Dboone,

Based on your Valentine's Day comment, I believe we have polar opposite impressions of the average social life of a baseball card collector/grader.

I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !

I do this as well, and I might also add a + or - after my expected grade.
I might write, for instance "9-" if I think it's a low end 9, and if it comes back as an 8 then I leave it.
But if I had written "9" or "9+" and it is returned an 8 then it goes in the re-sub pile.
This is very helpful to me since months can pass between submission and grading and I had long forgotten any expected grades.

I wonder if ex-card graders get frustrated like us when they get 9's on modern baseball card submissions.

They should video record a grader grading a card and have the grader mention everything wrong with the card and what he's looking for; all the while viewing his hands handling the card.. . Of course you can censor his face and disguise his voice. They can post it on the website.

Great idea, shine a light on the coach roaches. However it will never happen-----conflict of interest?
