89' Donruss help please.

I recently acquired a 1989 Donruss case and ripped two boxes. It has been a while since I have dabbled with the 89's and was curious if anyone could shed light on the sequence. In box, I netted 1 Griffey Jr., 1 Sheffield, 1 Johnson , 1 Ryan, 1 Ripken , 1 Shilling and 1 Biggio. Box 2, I pulled 3 Biggios and 2 Shillings nothing else. Does this seem accurate? No Smoltz in two boxes? I hate to think that the case had been tampered with and I really don't want to rip the entire case to determine it's authenticity.

The better question is: how did you get your hands on a whole case? Just kidding, I love ripping junk wax. By the way, I see a bgs 10 Griffey 89 donruss is over a grand with one day left.

I remember opening boxes straight from sealed cases that contained no rated rookie cards in the entire box when they first came out.

Yeah, nobody's effing with a case of 89 Donruss. Just the luck of the draw. I've gone 5-6 boxes of other product that I know was good without getting one particular card. It happens.

I appreciate all the feedback and humor. My 13 year old son asked me if people really tamper with boxes and cases. Unfortunately I had to tell him the truth. He was crushed! My son has developed a true passion for the hobby and asked me to place this topic on the board for clarification to my suspicion. I will be ripping 2 more boxes this evening and I will share the findings. I just hope it reaps positive rewards otherwise my son may start losing faith in humanity. To be young again.... . Stay tuned and I welcome the opinions and feedback.

    Doubt case was searched.
Donruss collation was horrible in 1989. I recently opened a rack case and was not able to make one complete set. Several of the racks had the same players showing on top, though no Griffeys image
Good luck with the rest of your boxes.

No one's searching stuff now, but they did back in the day.

I've personally been stiffed with obviously searched boxes of 1986 Topps, 1990 Donruss, and 1990 Fleer. The tell-tale sign with all the boxes was wax stained cards in the middle of the pack and missing stars from the era. The 1986 Topps box was picked up off Ebay back around 2003, and the 1990 Donruss and Fleer boxes were picked up in trades with a classmate's dad back in 1990.

The end of that specific story is: I got my dad involved, and we went back to the kid's house. the kid's dad denied everything and suggested that I was lying. My dad chuckled and said "I don't think you want to go that way." The dad responded by pulling out his wallet and handing me $50, which was about how much 3 boxes of 1990 Fleer and Donruss would cost at the card shop back then.

I'm not sure what I bought with that $50, but considering that it was 1990, I probably wasted it on more junk wax.

Okay here are the results of boxes 3 and 4. Box 3 yielded 1 Griffey Jr., 1 Smoltz, 1 Shilling, a Johnson, Biggio and Sheffield. Box 4 yielded 2 Griffey Jr's and one each of Sheffield, Smoltz, Shilling and Biggio. What was even better, my son ripped box 4 and pulled both Jr's. Great moment for a 13 year old. I guess my concerns with the legitimacy of the case has been answered. I appreciate the insight and the opportunity to bring this to such a great forum. My son is relieved and still has faith.

As long as you didn't buy from Gary Daggett, you should be good. That was the only adult that I've ever heard of selling resealed '89 packs.
  • Incidentally, I recently sold a box of 1989 Fleer wax box for the incredible price of $1.05 (with $12 to ship). However, the buyer messaged me that the box was tampered with as there was no Ripken and the sizes were not consistent in the packs, and that they seemed "glued". I balked at him for a second saying no one is tampering 1989 Fleer. However, he argued that in the day of the Ripken error craze, people were selling boxes at $100 or so and pulling cards out and resealing them. Is this something that happened to these boxes at one time?

That was my first thought initially when I opened the first two boxes. Having run a card and comic shop in the late 80's and early 90's I know that tampering with cases and boxes was a full time job for some. The most tampered with box however were the 86 Donruss. Not knowing the history of the case(s) in question was a bit unnerving considering I bought 10 of them. Now I can say with great certainty that they are legitimate.

People absolutely searched boxes of 1989 Fleer Baseball back in the day.
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !

I will not argue that point at all. The Ripken was the first real spoof card that I can remember anyone actually willing to pay the price to acquire. Quite popular and the catalyst to move tons of product back in the day.

Yes, back in the day, the early runs of 89 Fleer approached $100 per box. However, you were NOT guaranteed a Ripken error in each box. You had about an 80% chance, but depending on the run, you wouldnt get one from time to time
