Value of Gold in the World Cup

I am not a soccer fan, but did enjoy watching several games in the World Cup.

I was surprised to learn that the cup itself is made of 13.61 pounds of 18 carat gold.

At today's price, that makes the gold content of the cup valued at $218,000.00!!!

It has 11 pounds of gold. The base is not gold.

Then it ONLY has a melt value of ~$176,000.00!

Figured I would contribute this to the thread

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/soccer-dirty-tackle/does-germany-get-to-keep-the-world-cup-001837145.html

Germany got to take pictures with the cup and enjoy it - then it got locked away for next time while Germany got sent home with a fake cup.

Does this happen in other sports too?

I thought baseball, basketball, and football got a new trophy every year - hockey too but that one has signatures etched on it so I wouldn't be surprised to see this one on loan until next year.

Anyhow, this was news to me.

    Value of the trophy

In 2010 it is was estimated the trophy was worth over 10 million. No wonder they don't let you take it with you.

The cup itself can only be touched by winners and heads of state. I got a pic taken with it on the trophy tour Coke did with it this past year. It is behind glass so you can't touch it, but I was about 10 inches from it. The logistics they had to do to take it to like 200 countries was ridiculous. Big security to even touch the case it was in, on a private jet.

  • When the trophy was presented to crowd just prior to game by Puyol and Giselle, I was struck by how ugly the trophy actually is and by how lucky Tom Brady is...
