Are there PCGS AU58+ grade Collectors??

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,442 ✭✭✭✭✭
AU58+ seems like a purdy tough grade to get from PCGS. Are there AU58+ collectors and are the coins in this grade "hot" commodities? I don't believe I've seen an auction for one? Comments?

TOP POP coin in the Everyman sets so yes those are sought after by set makers of popular series.
Think many of them are privately traded. image

I only have one AU58+ by our hosts, an 1851-O 3 Cent Silver. I don't think I'd actively pursue them since they're so rare to locate.

So why is "AU58+" used instead of "AU59"?

Board member Nickcap is partial to 58+ as I recall. Don't remember him posting recently.

I know Darrell Kreiss has an 1898-O Half in one of his many registry sets of Halves
that is graded AU 58+. It's a POP ONE in 58+

There was a day I'd pay stupid money for that coin.

To me - it is just another gimmick started by TPG to drive revenue

Collecting opinions and paying stiff premiums for something, that if cracked out and resent, has less chance of being assigned the same grade than not .. Without trying to sound cliché I am only interested in collecting the coins I find appealing - the plastic is of secondary consideration

I like the idea of the 58+ grade. So far I only own one of them, a Capped Bust Half Dollar that crossed from NGC 62. Wish I could do it again.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

"I am only interested in collecting the coins I find appealing - the plastic is of secondary consideration". I agree with you, I don't understand why someone would allow a down grade like that just to get the coin in a PCGS holder? I did do it once, but only because I forgot to put a minimum grade for cross over.image

Not for me as I'll take a older non edge view AU58 over a recent AU58+ any day.

The are certainly AU58, MS60, MS61, and MS62 coins the equivalent of the AU58+. Seems like a labeling thing to me.....with the 58+ being the most valuable of this group.

Broadstruck - I agree with your premise in theory but you've been around plenty long enough to know the AU58 grade is issued for myriad reasons. Not all AU58 graded coins, even those in rattlers, OGH, and early generation blue holders are "Gem Sliders/AU64s)".... Many are truly or technically mint state coins with issues like slide marks or other detractions. Once again it all comes down to the collector having done his homework and buying what he likes. The grade on the holder is nothing more than another piece of information and opinion which is best used to gauge whether one is paying an appropriate price for the coin in question (if one is thinking of his exit strategy).

At least 1 member was hot for AU58+ graded coins. I recall some posts he made looking for them.

I have a couple of "Everyman" sets and, while I have tried to get AU58, when it made sense, I actually have no desire to pursue AU58+ grades.
I'm not resubmitting any of them, nor am I actively pursuing any (if they even exist for the half-cents...I haven't checked to see if any were made).

I won't get down on the grade, or those that go after them, but for me, they aren't worth going after.

For our 1/2c collection, we have 1825-1857, inclusive save for "1831", all in AU58, and are happy with that.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Top Slider Set has a ring to it. However, I wouldn't take on the challenge of trying to "make" a coin. They'd just have to get bought as they come available at a price a guy could "sneak" away , and still earn a mild "you suck" with.

Man - that would stink - resubmitting for a AU58+ and getting MS60. image

    I like the "MS60-2" or "MS70-12", would love to see a "MS70-69"

I bet the AU58+ would command more interest than the MS60, and realize the better hammer price, too!
