Sent some coins in for Regrade & TrueViews - photos up

BryceMBryceM Posts: 11,866 ✭✭✭✭✭
So, as much as I'd like to think otherwise, the information in CoinFacts is pretty hard to live without. Figuring that I needed it, I got the Diamond membership and the 8 "free" grading submissions. I have a handful of coins that I've picked up raw, and a few that I've cracked out of other holders, but not enough to fill an entire submission. I decided to give the regrade service a whirl and submitted a few from my collection that I thought might have some potential. I also decided to give the TrueView service a try as it establishes an excellent "official" photographic trail and represents one of the best values in numismatics. I also wanted to compare my photos with what they could produce.

Interestingly, while looking through the "My Inventory" part of the site today, I saw that the TrueViews were done. They're listed with the original cert number and the new grades haven't been posted yet. I assume that once grades are finalized, the TrueViews will be linked to the new cert numbers........??

I fancy myself as an "acceptable" coin photographer, but I must admit the TrueView photos are quite impressive. The level of detail they can capture is well beyond what my current setup can do, especially on the full-size images. There is one coin that is closer to the in-hand look in my own photos, but that's mostly a style thing.

Has anyone seen TrueViews show up before grades before?

When everything gets finalized I'll post some of the images and grades..........

As promised, here are some of the results:

This is a coin I got a couple of years ago from a trusted dealer. This one was in a pretty beat up rattler. I detest rattlers, so the decision to send it in was easy. It came back at the same MS65RB. No worries. The TV is amazing. My photo of this one is meh. Partially toned copper is something I'm still learning.

This one I got from the same dealer. I always thought this was under-graded. I was actually hoping to get bumped to MS66. It came back at MS65+.

I picked up this coin from Harry Laibstain at the Summer ANA last year. In this case the TV shows colors that are there, but the image is a little too enthusiastic for my taste. The in-hand look is something in-between the two shots, but probably a little closer to the TV. This one went from AU50 to AU53. Shooting outside of the holder is a distinct advantage for coins with this particular look:

Finally, this one. In this case I think the coin is well-depicted in both views. I'm not really sure what it takes to get an MS65, but this one has to be pretty darned close. It came back again as an MS64+.

Love that NM seated dollar! The TV image almost looks like axial lighting to me.

Nice coins, and I think you are right that the Peace dollars are still under graded.

Great post, Bryce. I prefer some of your images. I am not impressed by the 2c True View. Yours is better.

Your photos are so good, is there any reason why you opted for TrueView?
