Yup. Burdette talks about it in his Peace Dollar book.
I don't have the reference in front of me, but IIRC, virtually the entire mintage was melted. There are only a handful of extant pieces, one being a circulated piece found in a random bag of dollars.
.... but I'm shooting from the hip here. I'll check the book tonight when I get home.
I saw a 1922 NGC MS64 Medium Relief Peace dollar listed on eBay that had a rotated reverse but didn't have the extra ray. That's what has me confused about the medium relief designation. The NGC holder made no mention of the rotated reverse.
You're referring to the 4th ray under ONE, I assume. I never heard of a rotated reverse. Sounds fishy.
I wasn't aware any of the 3200 minted were released. They were all test strikes made during that difficult period in January when everyone was franticly trying to come up with a solution. Some were surely passed around for review; maybe they grew legs. Lance.
link I have seen these from NGC before do they have a different designation?
1922 MEDIUM RELIEF S$1
Variety Diagnostics This is a rare, transitional striking from dies that are in lower relief than the high-relief type of 1921 but higher in relief than the mass-produced dollars of 1922.

Something isn't right here. The coin pictued at the link above is in an NGC holder marked "Medium Relief". But the coin doesn't have the fouth ray below "ONE". And the holder doesn't say anything about the rotated die. Or the "D" mint mark.

one of my favorite qualities about you and messydesk, amazing attention to detail. .
It should state (business strike high relief, rev of 21) if it is what you guys are talking about. The sole med relief has the ray like the proof 22 HR

That same coin was recently on Heritage, and was PULLED before the auction ended.

.... I seriously doubt it's the one on eBay.
