Were they marked from a sealed case?

No. Not even sure that should drive up the price that much. Thats a lot of money for boxes that BBCE will have in stock again, as well as other reliable sellers.
Maybe it has something to do with the ebay bucks, maybe someone just wanted it NAO that badly.

Based on how long he intends to hold them, or if he just wants to rip them for fun, or if he's rich off his a#$, these are all variables that factor in.
Far be it from me to call out how a dude spends his own loot

If the item sold, it will say "Sold For" when you click on the link for the auction.

<< <i>If all 3 boxes were labeled from a sealed case, I could see it, as there should be a premium for an original and intact box from the case, but that is quite a price for those 3, even in this market. >>
How much premium does "from a sealed case" bring? I can see a significant premium for rack or cello boxes. For wax I assume it would be small.

I dont know, but a good question. I will pay a bit more if its a sealed case box. Wax, rack, or cello. But thats just me. I wonder what the rest of the
collecting community would do?
As far as this auction, thats friggin nuts!!! I collect mostly football, but I want a box of 83 baseball just because
If that had been a run of football, I could of understood. 81 being a $800 box (give or take)

I would agree that the premium would be even greater for a cello or rack box from a sealed case, but even though the cards on front or back aren't visible (in some cases, anyway), there is also definitely a premium for an original or intact wax box vs a put together box, not only for reasons of collation of the cards within the box, but for aesthetic reasons, as well, as all packs from an original box will appear uniform in condition and typically be fresher than those from different sources.

<< <i>I believe I saw a 82 T Wax Box go for $370 recently. BBCE has a couple of boxes from the early 80's up now and the 82 already has a $247 and the 83 has a $240 and the last BBCE Auth 1981 Box went for $300 over a month ago, so theyre worth quite a bit more than $600. Based on those recent sell prices, I would say the $1k isnt far off for that lot. >>
BBCE just sold a 1983 wax box on their website for $247. 1982 should be about the same. Anyone paying $300 for a 1981 box has rocks in their head. Considering how insanely unpopular(not to mention ugly) the cards from that year were due to zero rookie factor, there should be haybales full of unopened Topps product from 1981. And I'm pretty darn sure there is.
Buyer overpaid by around $200-350 depending on how you factor in shipping.

Agree the buyer may have overpaid based on what BBCE sells them IN store for, but ATM, there are no boxes of 81-82-83 Topps in stock, heck, there arent any 81-83 boxes from any company. Some people cant wait, some people dont care if they overpay if they can get it. I agree they would have overpaid if these things are available 24/7 and there are dozens of them, but theyre not available. Plus, y ou have to factor in the difficulty in high grade 81's. It makes no sense that an 81 box is even over $100 based on the logic of rookie and popularity of the set. Consider that those $300 boxes of 1980 Topps were considered "overpriced" since it really has only one solid rookie in it and its near impossible to get in PSA 10.....now I think anyone would be happy to pay 1k for that same box.
I agree that all these boxes are probably overpriced now. It doesnt make sense that a set of 83 Topps can be had for well under $50 while the boxes sell for $250 or more. But so is the market right now

I've purchased 1981 boxes - mostly wax and cello - at shows over the past few years. Every time I put them up for sale, they immediately get taken. I don't know what it is but 1981 seems to have a strong following.
