Card Show Pickup to share: 85-86 OPC Mario Lemieux Rookie. What would it grade?

I don't really do any hockey, but this is a classic card and I have always kind of wanted a Gretzky and Lemieux Rookie. Did a cash trade for it so I am in it at a nice price. I think it really has nice eye appeal, especially since so many of these have a tilt. Anyways, what would you guess it would grade? I have no idea how they evaluate the OPC cards given how they are cut. It does have a bit of a stain in the lower left edge on the front as well as some light surface staining on the back right edge and right near "Penguins" on the stat line of the back. I know its not high grade, but it does present well for what it is. I will probably submit it to BGS since I have some stuff going to them soon.

Are all those white specs on the card or dust on your scanner?

I don't see a problem with stains on the front. Hard to say with OPC on corners because of rough cut, top left looks like it has too much material and top right looks a little blunted. Either or both could be considered NM/MT or even mint depending on how they look under magnification. If no surface is missing at the tips, card is a blazer.

Back has some problems, but this might not hurt you too bad.

I predict a NM/MT grade with no qualifier based on what I can see here.

Good luck and no matter the grade, you have a beautiful card!

Stain is on the back on the bottom right by the X in Lemieux.

    Very nice card. Love Mario.

Can't really see stain on Ft so I hope that keeps a NQ away.

I wouldn't worry about the back stain.

    I say a very nice 7

I am guessing a '5' or '6' based on the corner touches I see on the reverse. I hope I am wrong.

Upper right corner on the front has a crease or fold, whatever you want to call it.

In my experience that's always resulted in a 7 and no higher.

Good luck if you sub it and post the results

Anything below 8.5 in a BGS Slab looks "off" with the white paper they use for the flip

    id send it to PSA

I agree. I cracked all my BGS 8's and put them in one screws. They look way better than those distracting white flips.
  • Looks like a strong 7.5. Love that card!!!

    I say 7 ST or straight 5 or 5.5

I see the stain on the left edge.....I think that drops it right off, the chipping/stain on the back a little more.

Definitely a nice card, just depends on how much of a pass it gets for the defects due to it being an OPC
