Without question, one of the greatest "off the cuff" speeches ever delivered. One listen to this speech is all one needs to hear to understand the character and person that Gehrig was. There was no regret, no woe-is-me, no self-centered pity. Just a reflection on the incredible life that he lived and the loving people that impacted his life and afforded him the opportunities that he enjoyed.

The Iron Horse was an incredible baseball player -- often overlooked because of the team he played for and the fact that Ruth was a teammate. But he may have been even a better man than a baseball player. In all of my years following baseball and reading about the history of the game, I've never once read a sour word about Gehrig. If you ever want to be amazed by stats, look at the consistency and the incredible numbers that he put up during his career and remember that he NEVER took a game off...

All MLB teams have a patch on their jersey today I believe. That speech kills me every time. I love the '34 Goudey where there is a Lou Gehrig says on Lou Gehrig! For you film buffs, he starred in a western called Rawhide in 1938 and is a cult classic now with Lou showing his skills as a ballplayer throwing billiard balls at bad guys skulls!
