Houston, the Eagle has Landed!!!

In this case, CPAMike has landed in Houston. Anyone in the area know if there are any local card shops worth visiting? I am specifically staying in Tomball, Texas.

Thanks in advance!!

Don't flaunt your love for the Mets down there. They're still sore about 1986!

Good card shops in Houston is going to be tough to find.

Houston Sports Connection on Westheimer probably has the best selection, you can judge for yourself on prices (probably depends on what you collect).

Sports Collectibles of Houston is the old school store on Beechnut, they surprise from time to time but mostly I've felt they were more just hanging on.

I guess you could check out the Batter's Box in Tomball, google it and you should find it.

There's a couple shops in Spring as well, that's not far from where you are.

For a city our size, the collectibles/card store selection is really terrible. I've been half considering opening my own just to prove it could be done.

I thought you were going to say you won the 1961 Rack pack with Maris showing. Then I remembered that auction hasn't started yet. Enjoy Houston. My Aunt and Uncle live there. I'm betting it's hot and miserable right about now.

5 or more shops in one city is terrible? I think that's more than Boston has. I'd be thrilled with 5 options, as I don't live in an urban area. I have to drive 1:20 in one direction or almost 2 hours in the other to hit a card shop.

Odyssey Comics and Cards in Katy off of North Fry Rd. is nice for a modern rip, but Houston Sports Connection is the most comprehensive thing we've got.

Since you're on vacation, does this mean you will rip packs while you're in Houston? Be careful for the trolleys downtown. I visited the lee a few weeks back and felt like they were coming out of nowhere sometimes.

RIP is not in Mike's vocabulary! (Unless he is offering his condolences on the board when a ballplayer passes away.)
    STAY HEALTHY!

Thanks for telling me about the Batter's Box. I go up to Tomball for my son's youth baseball team and will have to check that place out on my next trip.

Tell me more about this 1961 rack you speak of. image

Seriously, thanks for all the suggestions. I'll scope them out and let you guys know how it goes. I hope they all have A/C!!! And absolutely NO ripping. image

There's one more shop here in Katy, but last time I was there it was a full on gaming store, cards were packed up...they have a fairly sizable sports card inventory too; it's sad.

Have fun in Houston Mike. I have been there a few times and hate driving there. Everything is frontage roads and it took some getting used to.

    Hey Mike,

How did you make out in Houston?

Bounce's post brought home a couple of memories. I went to high school in Houston and my parents and two of my siblings are still down there. The last time I went to a card shop there was probably 1990 or so.

Sports Collectibles of Houston is co-owned by Larry Dluhy, who ran the bigger Houston shows in the 1980's. Based on their web-site, I think he/they still do some shows. I remember going to their store in the mid-80's to get Gary Carter.

Does anyone remember the store, also in SW Houston, that was owned and operated by a family? It was a father and two sons, one may still have been in high school at that time. The mother also worked in the store. They would have autograph guests. I remember getting Ryne Sandberg there around 1986.

I think with Batterbox, you would need to make an appointment. I contemplated it last year when I took my family down for a visit but didn't have enough time. Tomball is fairly close as my parents live by 249 near Dell.
