Irish Gunmoney

CRO listing of a piece of gunmoney (which looks like it might have sold) got me looking at one of my favorite collecting areas...Irish coinage, including gunmoney. Here is my 1689 shilling, 10r (December), a slightly better variety, in PCGS AU-55.

    Very neat.

I've always thought the gunmoney was cool.

While on my detecting trip to England last November, I went back to the van for a while to get out of the rain one afternoon. Another of the diggers had had enough, too, and joined me. We compared finds.

He had a lot of "greenies" (dug coppers) in his pouch. To my surprise, one was a 1689 gunmoney halfcrown. So they must have circulated in Essex. None of the group had had a clue what it was before I told them.

Not as nice as your shilling, of course (even by a long shot), but I thought it was exciting to be there when it was found.
