89 Hoops II

Picked up a case of 89 Hoops II last week. After a brutal 15-box spree, no Robinson #138. What are the odds, even if searched, that no Robinson would be there? With all of the sequence changes throughout, even a pack searcher is bound to miss a few.

Does anyone know the cards packed around #138? I'm curious if I'm missing those as well.

I also have hit 4 of the Pistons champion card. I'm not sure how rare this card is, but 4 out of 15 boxes.

If anyone wants to share in my pain, I have 5 more boxes at $12 each (includes shipping) - haha. I will post in BST.

Thanks,

David (LD_Ferg)

Pretty sure you can only get the other Robinson card in Series 2 boxes.

Sealed at top, not at bottom. No deception, but I was hoping it was a legit case.

Vito, all cards should be in Series II boxes. Thru 15 boxes, not a complete set (I was not trying to complete a set). There may be a few other cards missing, but the Robinson is the most notable. I did get the Robinson from Series II.

Vito is right....there is no Robinson 138 in Series II.

When those first came out, myself and a friend pulled an all nighter going to every Kroger in Knoxville (11 at the time). We knew the sequence of the cards and was able to go through 11 display cases and buy the series II Robinsons for 35 cents each out of the packs. We also snagged all the Jordans and Birds (Bird was actually hot then). I can say with 1000000% certainty, the Robinson 138 is NOT in the series II boxes

Edited to add that there are also about 50 or so short printed cards that also did not appear in series II packs

This link has a checklist which shows which cards were SP's and only available in Series I

I take it some of these short prints are really not worth much?? Someone has a total of 42 Jay Vincent cards for a BIN of $2.79.

Are there any SPs that are worth anything special?

Great info. I never knew Series I cards did not exist in Series II. Definitely explains my results.

Vito, I misunderstood your response. Makes sense now.

    Thanks guys.

Back in the day, it was a pain in the butt to try and track down some of the SP's.....of course, this was pre-ebay days. I think put together about 300 sets of these and had to track down the SP's to finish them and usually paid about a dime a piece for them, but finishing a set for $5 wasnt bad when the set was going for $30-$40 complete. My guess is now, these are about as rare as fleas on a junkyard dog.

On another note, I have hoped to get a case of series I to bust open just for fun, but I am finding they are pretty hard to get. Boxes would be OK, but these were HIGHLY searchable. When I opened some of them back in the day, you could get anywhere from 2-6 Robinsons per box and sometimes multiples in the same pack.

I bought a series one case for $200.00 when they first came out. Shortly after, they skyrocketed. I was getting 4 or 5 Robinson's per box and selling them for $20.00 to $25.00 each.............and sold all of them since they were going for about $30-$35.00 from other dealers. I was also getting $95.00 to $125.00 per box. Those were the good old days. I still have three boxes left from that case and some loose packs.

They had a mail in offer for a different version of the pistons card. I think they were like 25 cents each in whatever quantity you needed
