What's next for me...

So now that my '75 set is done, I've been thinking what's next. Today I decided to take inventory of everything I have and see where I'm at with stuff. Needless to say I was blown back by how much junk I have and things I need to sort through and get organized. There's a guy in town that pays pretty decent money for large lots of commons. Truth is selling to him saves me a ton of time listing on Ebay and just figuring out what to do with the stuff.

My collecting goal this year was to finish the '75 set and now that it's done I need to go through and just inventory and purge. While I'll probably bust some new stuff here and there, just to bust something, I'm going to try and focus on actually organizing my collection. To be honest, this is a bigger feat than putting the 75 set together. My hope is to find some hidden gems that I've forgotten about and actually get an idea of what I do and don't have. I want to get rid of as much modern as I can, minus all-stars and stuff that my boys want, so that I can make room for other things.

I also want to focus in on getting some completed set that I've bought graded as well as having all of my pre-war stuff graded at the very least for authenticity. Just thought I'd share and see if anyone has some key thoughts to organizing collections or things that have or have not worked for you in doing so?

Once my collection is organized I think I'll feel comfortable moving on to starting a new set.

I'm in a similar spot. Sold 30,000 commons on Craigslist in November and am slowly selling and trading things that I like to obtain or fund things that I love. The more focused the better I now say, and as I've focused on a small number of players and sets my enjoyment of collecting has increased exponentially. I wish the same to you. on a related note, I absolutely agree that you should get all your prewar stuff graded/authenticated. I have very little of it, but plan to do the same with mine.
  • Anytime I hear of someone debating on a direction to go, I always charm in with the "best of the best."

The best cards and the best players! That equals the "Post War HOF Rookies" set.

No commons, all super stars! Usually, the best cards from each years set. My favorite by far to collect.
And if you ever want to turn them over, you never have a shortage of buyers, especially if they are high grade & centered.

    Just my 2 cents!

Best generic advice I can give is think about what you like the most and keep focus. For me, I am a player collector and just collect football. There are a lot of neat-looking baseball cards I see and I could easily start going in that direction, but then my collection would start losing focus and become disorganized.

Several years back, I rekindled my interest in coin collecting, about the time I joined CU. I started acquiring all kinds of stuff and it didn't take long to realize my collection lacked any real focus or theme. It took me quite a while to pare it down and divert the funds towards the things in which I had the most interest. I also found that by maintaining focus, you become more knowledgeable in those segments.

As you can see, I learned about collecting focus the hard way with coins, so I’m trying my best to stay focused with cards. Best wishes with your new endeavors going forward.
