There was a local card show today....

Its been a while since my dad and I set up at a card show (probably three years), but about every six months or so there is a local show here in Dubuque. We decided to set up this last time, since we've acquired a significant amount of stuff since then. The show was sparsely attended, but a few thoughts.....
It was great to just spend a few hours with my dad talking about cards. We talked about our collecting goals, the current state of both the vintage and unopened market, and just had a lot of fun. Way back in the day (in the mid to late 80's), I LOVED going to card shows. My dad was a dealer in Dubuque, and it was just great to go along and help him at the show once a month. Obviously a lot has changed since then, but I enjoy it more now for different reasons. Back then, I ripped anything in sight! I joked with my dad today, that I have done a total 180 from then, and now I hardly rip anything I buy!
Its still cool to watch dad's bring their kids to shows and share in their collecting. The kids get so excited about spending $5 or $10 of dad's money buying their favorite player. I guess there was probably more of that going on when I was younger, but its still fun to watch and made me wonder if my kid will like cards as much as I do someday?
I brought some of my unopened to the show, and even sold an 84 topps baseball wax box, and some 1980 topps baseball packs. The guy that purchased the 80 topps packs told his kids, "now dont tell your mom, I bought these!" ha ha......
The other dealers at the show dealt mainly in raw vintage between vg and ex probably, and while this isn't necessarily my thing, there are some set builders in the area that were picking over a lot of the stuff. A few of the dealers did OK considering how sparsely populated the show was.
I even made up some business cards, and just had a good time with it. While we didn't make much, it still was a great time!
I posted some pictures of our table.......

<< <i>I live in iowa city. Never heard of this show. Would like to come next time. Do you have a store >>
No store, just something my dad and I do together. I can put you in touch with our dealer that hosts the show, and he can put you on the email list for when the shows are. Just PM me your email address.
I've turn my messages to on. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Derryle

If you want to be placed on the mailing list, contact David Orr at TriStateBC@aol.com. Dave has a nice shop and he always brings good stuff to the show.

<< <i>Very cool Jeremy! I didn't know you were breaking into selling. Nice looking stuff! I bet you guys had a great time. What's the name you used on the business cards?
Jeff >>
Hey Jeff! I dont know how much I'm breaking into selling just yet, but my dad and I decided to set up at the LCS just mostly to spend a day together talking cards and visiting with others. Our business cards say G&J Cards....real original, I know Its been cool connecting with other collectors over the past few days and I'm trying to figure out right now whether I'm a BUYER or I'm a SELLER. Part of it, is getting married, and having a smaller card budget, so I have to turn over stuff I currently have if I want to buy what I want. I guess more or less, I just like sharing my interest with others, and if that leads to a sale here and there, that is OK. We don't have the inventory to do a bigger show like Sun Times or the National, but its nice doing the local card shows since its little overhead and shorter drives
Hopefully all is well with you.
