1973 Topps Reggie Jackson #255 -- Naturally "skinny"?

I've got two nice Jackson's from the 73 Set and notice both are short side-to-side. One is an 8.5, one is raw.
I was thinking the raw one must be trimmed, but in looking at a bunch of 8's, 9's, and raw sold on ebay I see many that look skinny to me - all side to side. The raw one came in the set I bought recently, that had never been cherry picked - so the likelihood of one card of 660 being trimmed seems remote.
At the very least, the borders are more narrow than on other 73's, although quite a few don't seem to fill the holder (side to side).
Has anybody else noticed this? Is it a "known" thing?
edit: I also see many rough cuts on the left border - related?
