Mantle rookie experts out there?

Hello all. I have bought a larger group of nice vintage cards, the highlight of which is this Mantle rookie. I SHOULD be okay if it turns out a fake, as rest of cards will make up the difference and we negotiated an exchange of other cards if I find it to be fake, but I am sitting here chewing my fingernails off waiting for UPS on tues. Thought I'd put this pic out there and see reactions. Thanks!

Something looks not quite right there. Would love to see the back.
  • don't have good back pic yet. will have to scan myself. Can't wait to feel and touch and smell it and compare it to other 51s with my loupe. give it the light test, all that. this is all i have for now. The black appears to be solid, but hard to tell in a pic

I was thinking the same thing. Coloring just looks too cartoonishy, if there is such a word!!

Skin tone looks a little off. But it is hard to tell on these from just a scan.

  • been looking at this site and don't see any really obvious red flags, but sure that means next to nothing

The first alarm anyone should look for with that card is skin tone. One wants to avoid what's known as Mick's 'sunburn' look on fakes. And as someone else said above, the borders are uncharacteristically beefy for the issue. That said, all this is going on a limb as I don't have the card in hand and it's not a high-res scan. I would manage expectations, and basically expect the worst so that any other outcome is gravy. And gravy is mad tasty.

    Hello,

The corners look to sharp for the overall aged look of the card.

It looks very pixelated, like a photocopy unfortunately...hopefully it's a bad picture.

The boarders also look to big for this issue. Doesnt look normal to me, Can you give exact measurements as well?

I am not at all in the camp that would suggest that it is legit. The trees, especially in the lower right are out of synch with the typical distances and appearance which suggests additional cropping of the original image (hence the larger borders on the final product). Additionally, there are dual print lines on the card. While susceptible to print lines, it is not common to have them both vertically and horizontally.

Aside from the garish tones and imagery, there are too many red flags to suggest that the card is legitimate...

Fake....clouds in top left are wrong.

First major red flag? It's not graded. That in itself gives it away.
