No longer a virgin! (Unopen material)

Well, you unopen material guys finally got to me. I have always been much more of a single card kind of guy, but tonight, I did it! I bought my first box, a 1983 Topps baseball wax box. Steve has then currently at $249. I wanted a 1981 but could not find one at a decent price (to me) so I will start with the 83'. On your recommendations, I am going to only purchase from BBCE or from an ebay seller with excellent feedback selling BBCE wrapped products. My goal is to get 1981,82,83 Topps & am thinking about 84 Donruss, 85 Donruss, maybe some 91' Stadium Club football. Maybe 89' Score football. I think there may be potential in 2013 Topps or Bowman Chrome, seems to be a nice selection of rookies there. I would like 2012 Topps Chrome football but I think it may have already topped out? Any other suggestions out there?

$400 is way too high for the 81 wax box. The last time BBCE had them they were $250 and that was only a few weeks ago.

Yes, I agree, I was expecting about $250. The only other seller that I might purchase from is the Dugout, but there BIN prices are just to high for me. They do have quite a selection though & sometimes will sell in an auction format.

It is tough to stop yourself after saying you are only buying a few items. just like this Steve Martin line from the Jerk.

Well I'm gonna to go then! And I don't need any of this. I don't need this stuff, and I don't need *you*. I don't need anything. Except this.

    [picks up an ashtray]

Navin R. Johnson: And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this ashtray... And this paddle game. - The ashtray and the paddle game and that's all I need... And this remote control. - The ashtray, the paddle game, and the remote control, and that's all I need... And these matches. - The ashtray, and these matches, and the remote control, and the paddle ball... And this lamp. - The ashtray, this paddle game, and the remote control, and the lamp, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The paddle game and the chair, and the remote control, and the matches for sure. Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

    [walking outside]

Navin R. Johnson: The ashtray, the remote control, the paddle game, and this magazine, and the chair.

Navin R. Johnson: [outside now] And I don't need one other thing, except my dog.

    [Shedhead growls at him]

Navin R. Johnson: I don't need my dog.

I thought BBCE had one last week at $249 for the 1981 Topps....$400 is way to much IMO

Congratulations on your purchase! I think that is definitely a good year to start, with the three HOF RC's. Your want list looks like a strong list of unopened from the 80's. Good luck and keep us posted on your pick ups. I wish I had gotten a box of the 2012 Topps Chrome FB when they were around $150. Hard to justify the purchase at $180 though.

$400 for a 1981 BB wax box is an aggressive price point. I bought Steve's 1981 box from the site the other week for $250.

Congrats on your venture into the land of unopened! 83 is a good box to start out with. Seems like you have some nice product to purchase in mind. The important thing is to enjoy what you buy, no matter what the market may be doing. Other guys on here can be very helpful with questions as well! Look forward to following along with your other purchases!

Welcome to the dark side, CBD. Unopened is like quicksand -- now that you're in, cease trying to get away. The more you struggle, the faster you'll sink. image

As an aside, this bad boy of the sealed case variety went for $364 delivered, so don't be surprised if fo hundy capitulates sooner rather than later.

Watch these boxes leap past $500 in Cleveland.

    LOL!! Quite a pitch there!

For some reason I recall these being like $90 a few years ago. Am I correct?

Correct, about 2 years ago. They have plateaued at about $250 though for past 6-8 months now, with a premium for one "from a sealed case."

  • For strictly investment purposes, right now obviously the early 80’s is where you want to play. Although the 70’s prices keep astounding me. I don’t think You need to limit your purchases to BBCE product for the early 80’s (yet) and especially not for 86 on (I do think 86 will come on strong in a few years). And as for modern, I don’t think we will be around long enough to see modern unopened be worth more then what we buy it for, IMHO. Although I did turn a $70 2009 unopened bowman draft picks box into $240 in just 4 years because of Trout ~ so maybe there is some short term gain after all.

Funny thing about 1981 is that seems to be the only year pre-1986 that OPC sells for more than Topps. No idea why, either. But when I bought my 81 OPC box from Steve it was $200 and the Topps boxes at the time were $100.

81 OPC baseball wax is tough to find. I am looking for a box if anyone has one they want to part with.
