FairlanemanFairlaneman Posts: 10,423 ✭✭✭✭✭
Description has Changed some and the Price Looks as if it Really has Changed some.
If the Reserve is not Outrageous this would be a Nice Piece To Have.
And Here is the 26S Again !! Is the Third Time a Charm ??

Watch it, that's three threads this week. Gonna hit that quota real quick. image

Nice coin, and I know the 45-P is rare with FB, but how much of a premium would you place on partial bands? I know that SLQ's generally are not priced higher is 80% of a head is present vs 25%.

I believe the Last Time He had it listed He wanted $1250.00 For It. " WAY TO MUCH" Might be Interesting to See what His Reserve is this Time.image

Here's a 65. I think a 65 Can Be Very Pretty. You Must remember Earlier Dates and Later Dates have Different Grading Standards. Thats Not on Paper but Its the TRUTH.

$1250 is far too much for a coin that's "almost" there. If it was really nice, and truly 95% FB, I might bid up to $100.

The Merc additions that I entered yesterday showed up bright and early this morning, and I've moved up 2 positions to #10. There were a couple of common dates, and a much tougher one. I'm rapidly running out of "easy" coins to add to the set, and the 4 sets just ahead of me have also had recent additions, so I'll be lucky to stay where I'm at, let alone move up much further. Apparently no one listened when I suggested they give up Merc' s for state quarters. image

Let me get this straight. Most 45-P's are as flat as a pancake. A FSB MS66 is worth many, many thousands. And a true 95% FSB (which, by the image, this is) is only worth $100?? I feel the urge to buy some tulips!!!!!!!!

To me it's like people charging a premium on Standing Liberty Quarters because the head is 90% Full. Or people who want hundreds of dollars for a 53-S Franklin because the lines are 95% full. It's either all or none in my book. If it doesn't have a Full Head, Split Bands, Full Bell lines etc by strict definition, then it ain't worth a premium. Try and recoup that premium when you go to sell.

It Seems there are two Very different Opinions on FB Mercs. I agree with Tonelover on All Merc's Except the 45P. I would and have Paid a Premium for a 45P with about 80% bands. No way would I Pay what This Seller has wanted in the Past for His. Probably if it was Needed $200.00 to $300.00 would about be it. That Seems to be about what the Local Dealer here thinks they are worth also. Tough Coin and in Demand if the Price is Right as Many Collectors just Cannot Afford a True FB 45P Coin.

                              Ken,

Wotta guy!! If you'll do that, I'll take back what I said about your '26-P. It's starting to look more like a gem. image

I was out of town when the weighting for Merc's was posted, and just saw the thread about it. I was surprised at how high a few of them were, and would like to see some adjusted downward, with an increase in the bonus points for FB coins. The basic weight appears to have been based on the value of coins in 65FB. The 5 coins with a weight of 10 are the only ones that are over $10,000 in 65FB; in 65 NON-FB, the top half dozen coins would include the '21-P, 21-D, and '26-S; the '19-D is a bit further down the list, and the '18-D is WAY down the list. I think the basic weight should be based on non-FB coins, with the bonus for full bands encompassing a wider range than the proposed system. For instance, an '18-D might have a weight of 5, with a bonus of 8 for FB.

Does anybody else feel this way, and have they contacted BJ?

'smatta, you guys afraid of a little reserve?!? LOL image
I'm with Ken on this. I am willing to go a little more for that % of Full _____, as long as the rest of the coin is all there. I think that when there is such a big difference in price (as in the '45 Merc or '27-s S.L.) there is some room for some extra $ for that %.
I s'pose I shouldn't have stated such, what with all the dealers present, but I think these premiums will continue to be added and raised! image

Congrats to all on the updates, especially Jim. Way to go with the '21-D! image
Can you believe that my set first registered at #9? Been fallin' ever since,...even with all my updates! image

I updated my sets yesterday, also. So far only #2 shows any change. One problem is that my #2 set can't accept the ones from my first set that got upgraded. Message tells me that the same coin can't be used in two of the same kind of sets. Also tried to move my '45 MS62FB into my first set with the same results. I hope that they get squared away before Friday! image

Ken I saw your other thread, and all I can say is that your pictures reaffirm my belief that Karens were widly distributed in MS70 and tone beautifully! image

On the Weighting. Basically all I did was Scan the Weights of the Coins I considered to be the Hardest to Find in 63FB and Higher then drew some conclusions from that. I thought the 16D was Over Weighted and the S Mint 19S thru 27S and a Couple of the D Mints 25D and 27D were a Little Under Weighted. The One Glaring Mistake was the 39P getting a 3 as a FB Designation. Heck 39P FB Coins are Everywhere. Most of the Guys Can take or Leave the Weighting. I think its Sort of Neat that Weights are Being put on the Coins, but Really the Only Sets that are Affected by Weighting are the Complete High Grade Sets. Now If Someone was to Just Collect the High Grade Keys and Semi Keys the Weighting Probably would Affect His Standing. Just thoughts as I Have Not Studied the Weighting at all.

I would think you should stay awake nights worried about our competition in the MS Barber quarter registry sets. For the rest of the Merc collectors, Don and I are head to head for #1 ranking!! Take a look. Given our close competition there, I, personally, think you should be investing in Barber quarters to insure your lead. Forget Mercs, go for Barbers!!

I agree with you: I can take the weighting or I can leave it. All it does for me is to make it a bit harder to calculate how a new coin affects my overall "score."

I would think that you would be concentrating on the proof Washingtons more. Don't get left behind by some of these new state quarter collectors! image

I have 3 Barber quarters that I could put in the registry - all 64's - so Don would beat me in the grade points category. I'd like to form a year set of Barber dimes and quarters, but it's tough to find eye-appealing 64's, and I've got enough irons in the fire as it is.

I like Barber coins if they're MS or proof, and admire nice original coins as low as VF. In lower grades, I wouldn't use the word "ugly", but they are "unattractive" IMO. image
