If you get a PSA qualifier, which is easiest to live with.

What's the general concensus? OC (off center), MK (mark), PD (print defect), MC (mis-cut), ST (stain), or OF (out of focus).

Well, obviously it depends on the degree of the qualifier. All things being equal, I have seen many cards with MK or ST for a flaw on the back of the card. I can live with that.
  • As far as I'm concerned, none are acceptable. If I had a card come back with a qualifier, I would either crack it out and try again, or sell the card.

Easy: ST or MK on the back with a gorgeous front. But I'd just request NQ and take the low grade. OC due to front centering is the worst, to me-- just no hiding that one. But give me back damage on a card that would otherwise be unaffordable, all day.

    NONE of them. EVER.

The biggest thing I've always hated about qualifiers is that they don't really indicate how severe/minor the issue is.

For example a card with 75/25 centering and a card with 99/1 centering will both get an OC. A card with a small pencil mark or full-on magic marker scribble on the back will both get a MK.

+1, except that I may be OK with the qualifier.

Edited to add: I HATE O/C, MC and OF the most.

    MK-

Particularly when it is on the back of a blank-backed card [think Old Judges, Zeenuts, etc.]
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Case in point -- one of the most beautiful Old Judges that exist [not mine!]

That is, in my opinion, one of the best cards ever posted on these boards. You simply do not see contrast on an OJ like that. They are usually so terribly washed out. Not to mention the player was a badass and looks like badass in that shot.

    That is serious cardboard.

Any veteran collector knows you can throw out the grade on a card like that. The grade is meaningless. Anything on the sticker is rendered utterly meaningless, when compared to the evidence absorbed by any pair of functioning eyes beholding that card.

That is not one you see in every collection. Makes a 70s condition rarity seem downright pedestrian.

I sweat that one. Major props.

I'd love to! Can you do that? How? I'd rather have a lower straight grade. I've got a sub coming up where I'm trying to dodge an OC qualifier. Any advice is appreciated.

Complete the form as usual. Print it. Then, hand write on the top "NO QUALIFIERS, PLEASE".

If you use the new online form (I recommend you do--it's awesome), there is a checkbox and multiple comment fields where you can type it in. Still, after printing, I recommend you hand write it there too ...

sometimes, PD or ST is subtle or even difficult to detect
O/C is always evident, as are MK and OF
MK should mean that the card is not as issued, so some think that the worst

    Mild ST....
    Good for you.

I always submit with no qualifiers requested. However, if I have to have a card with a qualifier, I'll take either a 9 (ST) with the stain being a wax stain on the front or a 9(PD) where the print defect is very hard to detect.

Awesome Delehanty by the way! If I were ever going to start collecting pre-war, a card like that would motivate me to do so...until I saw the price. image

A card with a wax stain on the front can easily become an unqualified card if you use a piece of cloth to rub the stain away, so that should be the obvious choice.

When I was a Collector nothing irritated me more than qualifiers, to the point where I wouldnt even consider buying one unless it was an insanely hard card to obtain.

Im not sure whats worse though- Out of Focus? Miscut? Off-Center? Ughhhhhhhhhh

In the "Min Grade" column, write "NQ." Do this for each card where you don't want a qualifier.

I've seen cards with the ST qualifiers that make you scratch your head. Stain just not visible to naked eye.
