Not too old at all. I remember he had his Cy Young season when I first got serious into collecting around 1990.

I wonder who else has passed that had a SLU made during their playing days?

He also had that notable error in 1989 Topps.

WOW! I remember his run with Oakland and picked up every rookie card I could find in 1989 and 1990. Think I bought maybe a dozen. Card was nearly vintage during that era.

    RIP Mr. Welch.

Sad to hear. My first game I went to was in 1979 when I was 7. I remember how strong the Dodgers pitching staff was that they could afford to put Welch in the bullpen for the playoffs and WS. I mean, here's a guy who goes 9-5, 3.40 era and 141 innings pitched in a strike shortened year in 1981, and he doesn't make the cut as a starter in the playoffs because the Dodgers have Valenzuela, Hooten, and Reuss, all of whom are just lights out that year.

I was really happy to pull his auto out of the 2013 topps archives product a few months ago.

There have been several. Off the top of my head they are Bo Diaz, Allan Wiggins, Kirby Puckett, Donnie Moore, and Dan Quisenberry. I am sure there are more, can research it if anyone wants.

On topic.. RIP Bob. A very good pitcher for some dominant teams. Boy I miss the 80's.

    What is SLU?

RIP Bobby Welch. He fought a lot of demons, including alcoholism. I hope this is not related to anything along the line of drugs, but unfortunately when someone passes this young, and they have addiction issues in their past, it's the first thing that comes to mind.

That being said, he was a great guy and fun pitcher to watch.

SLU stands for Starting Lineup. Kenner Toys made the figures starting in 1988.
Welch has two figures, 1989 and in the 1990 Award Winners set.

I still remember him, as a 21 year old rookie, coming in to face Reggie Jackson with 2 out in the ninth, tying run at 2nd and the go-ahead run on 1st. Welch was throwing pure gas. Reggie fouled back a few, but that's the best he could do. Welch struck him out to end the game. Here's the link at the LA Times

Way too soon for him (or anyone for that matter) to go image

Darryl Kile had a slu figure. I think willie Hernandez passes as well.
  • Talked to Bobby on the phone before……always a nice man with inner battles. Played high school baseball with friend's dad who is national crosschecked for Braves. He was a good guy who owned Reggies Jackson in the 78 WS. Amazing battle. RIP Bobby.

Always loved that 1991 Score card of his.

So, I happened to stumble upon a listing that was put up right when he passed: Not a rookie

Seemed like a questionable choice to try selling it at this particular time by duping someone who didn't know better about RC's but was into it because of the news, so I took a second and wrote to the seller "Bob Welch's rookie was a 1979 issue, 12 years before this one. Thanks in advance for revising your listing title to remove the word Rookie from it."

The reply I got back was "Hi, yes sir it is his first SI for Kids card issued, Thx"

Oh, thanks DeltaBravo, didn't realize every time an issue had the first card for a particular player made by them, it was an RC image I guess that means there are 800 different rookies in the 1989 UD set then, etc.

Pulled this from a pack Tuesday night. Checked ebay and it was a $5 card. It's going for much more now obviously. I planned on selling the card (along with the other hits from the case) at some point but I have no interest in profiting from his death. What would you do in this situation?

Continue as planned, you had nothing to do with his passing. Would you not sell autos of others who have passed? Like it or not, there's always a premium when they can't sign any more autos, but I would view it as more of an issue with the buyers.
