1986/87 Fleer Basketball PSA 9 Set Break Random Gamble

With the success of the Auction House/BBCE Topps Mini pack out, has anyone considered doing this with other items that may interest the masses on this board? Particularly, a complete 1986/87 Fleer Basketball PSA 9 Set is currently being randomized by Blowout. What the company did was gather interest, purchased a PSA 9 set from eBay and then sold 143 spots to their forum members. So my question is, would members here be interested in something like that? I'd imagine BBCE wouldn't mind making the purchase for a set if the made money from it. Estimated cost would be about $49 per spot. No host, no changing hands with the exception of the original owner, BBCE to the new owner.I've also seen it done with a 1991 Topps Desert Shield set.

This was just posted to gain other members opinions and nothing more. I have not spoken to BBCE about this or anyone else for that matter.

Edited to add: 143 slots sold in less than 3 hours!

I'd probably go in on something like that even though in your example there is what about a 10% chance of actually getting a card that's worth more than the entry fee?

Is it that high? The upside is big and those odds are way better than ripping packs.

$49 is pretty reasonable for a slot in a break like that. If we are talking about a PSA 9 NQ set, there are plenty of cards that would get you your money back and more. Worse case scenario is a common which would probably be worth around $9-10. Off the top of my head cards that would likely put you at or ahead of the $49:

    Kareem $100+
    Kareem sticker $400
    Barkley $100+
    Bird $100
    Bird Sticker
    Drexler
    Ewing ~$$100
    Magic
    M. Jordan $2k?
    M. Jordan Sticker $300
    K. Malone ~$100
    Mullin $100
    Olajuwon $100
    Wilkins $150+
    Wilkins Sticker $100
    Worthy ~$100
    Checklist $200

So without even thinking about low pop common cards that may get you close to your fee back, there are no less than 14 cards that will get you over $100 back. So in the $49/slot scenario, there is a 1 in 10 chance you can win a card valued double your cost of entry. And of course there is that 1 in 143 chance you win the lottery and get a $2k card. At $49/slot I would sign up for something like this.

I got in on this break last night and ended up with Xavier McDaniel rookie and the Alex English sticker.
I lost a bit of money on this but knew before hand I probably would.
I would be interested in this break if it happened again.
  • Who would do the random? BBCE?

i'd also throw in a PSA 8 set to lower the per-entry fee and give another big hit. 86 fleer is the perfect set to do this for.

I agree this set is an ideal one for this type of break. Besides the Jordan RC, there are a number of other HOF RC's that would make it a fun break and a worthwhile break cost-wise for more than just the big winner.

    My quick calcs indicate:
PSA 9 set plus stickers gives a buy in right around $50
PSA 8 set plus stickers gives a buy in right around $20

These are give or take a little, but should be pretty easily achievable

In either case, there's basically 14-15 cards and 4 stickers that should work out to even or better (maybe even a couple of PSA 9 low pop commons but those aren't sold frequently enough to know for sure so I'm not counting them)

So you're basically looking at at 1 in 8 chance of break-even, with a shot at a nice Jordan RC - not too bad

I couldn't help myself and opposed to buying a few 2014 Bowman blasters from Wal Mart, I went ahead and bought one of these when it was posted. A half hour later, it went from 40 spots to 12...so I helped myself to another. I already started a raw set from packs so I figured I may as well add some already graded. I missed the boat on any key rookie cards but it was fun and worth it.

To answer the random question, one of the guys from BBCE could do the random via UStream or similar liv video feed site and record themselves on random.org.

    EditedimageSA 9 set is preferred.
  • An update of sorts, I bought in for two slots and ended up with a common and a semi star (Ralph Sampson). I am happy with it as I am putting the set together. I just missed out earlier this morning on another PSA set break (PSA 8/9 this time) at $28 a slot (132, so no stickers). It sold out rather fast. According to the host on Blowout, they are going to do another one next week. It looks like this will keep going until the majority get their fix on Fleer Basketball.

I don't have a blowout user id, but I would be interested in getting in on a break. Sounds fun.

Sampson is a Basketball HOF member, and that's his rookie card. You did better than you thought.

I don't even collect basketball but I'd be in for a $20 slot in a PSA break.

yep, they did one yesterday and it was gone pretty quick - mix of PSA 8 to 9, jordan in this one was an 8

i'll be surprised to see another full PSA 9 set with the stickers go up, it's a tough gather especially on the stickers

i much prefer the 9 break over the mix, but that's just me - although it is about $8 slot or so just on the MJ regular card

What a fun and interesting idea. I'd be in on a PSA 9. We could really do this with any set that comes up

  • Another PSA 8 set went up for a group break and sold out rather quickly once again. I missed it but the PSA set break idea seems to be gaining steam, at least with this set.

Do you have a relationship with the folks selling these breaks? If so, could you let them know our board is interested in getting some spots in the next break?

I posted on the boards a month ago that a local shop was breaking up a raw set and the Jordan actually looked pretty nice. I believe the buy in was 12 bucks per slot or 30 bucks for three...something like that. I totally forgot to get him my cash and was ticked I missed the chance because it was a very good, low odds way at getting a shot at a card (any many good quality rookies) that I would probably never have the chance to buy.

I think we will be seeing more of these types of breaks as live wax breaks and the like become more popular.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

blowout did another one yesterday for a primarily PSA 8 set

slots sold out in right around 3 hours at $28.50 per
  • ive been in all the blowout breaks and would be definitely in one were it to happen here. I liked the mixed 8/9 set they did with a Jordan 8, lower entry fee but I landed 2 psa 9 and 2 psa 8 (all commons). this week I got a barkley 8 which is one of the nicer ones.

I think these would be great to do and a bunch of people are all over them (hence the sell outs in less than 4 hours). only having to fill 143 slots doesn't take long at all, easy random, sort to pack and ship, its not too bad at all.
