How does this happen.....USPS scanning packages

I sent 2 bubble wrap envelopes with cards reinforced with cardboard. I used PAYPAL shipping. I mailed them from the same location. Neither package has any progress at all with tracking....they've not been scanned in. This was like 5 days ago. Luckily both packages are a total of about $30. It just burns me. 1st guy already opened a case. I told him if the tracking does not update, I will refund on Friday. Being proactive, I emailed the other buyer and asked him to be patient.
How can there be no scan at all for 2 packages and it's been 5 days?

Same here Mickey.
Edited to add: I have had that happen a few times as well over the years. It's possible it went out of the first PO without getting scanned and wont get scanned until delivery.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
I would not waste time waiting on line at the PO to mail out $30 packages unless you have lots of free time. It is maybe a bit riskier to use a drop off box but if you go inside to the PO and drop the package off in the slot inside, it should be fine. A package can go missing at any point in the delivery process, tracking updates or no tracking updates.

Then, got "lost" and never delivered. Buyer opened a case, and I had to refund $100 card.
90 days later, I happened to recheck for fun, and package finally got delivered.
Buyer refused to pay or return card. What a bum...I had no recourse because case was closed.
So is the life on ebay, the USPS can bend you over and just when you think its over, in comes eBay for seconds
<< <i>I have had packages arrive with no tracking updates till delivery, but it is unusual.

I recently had a $900 package disappear after scanning out at the local post office. That was two months ago. Fortunately I insured it.

Wow, that is very troubling, John. Did the USPS pay out the insurance claim? If so, what did you provide to prove value and how long did it take to get a check? That was my point--a package can go missing at any point even after being scanned in. For a package of that value, I would go to the clerk, though.
As charrigan stated, USPS is usually very reliable, if not very efficient. In most cases, packages do turn up, unless it is stolen, of course.
I also uses Express Mail for any package of great value. The insurance is much cheaper than USPS priority rates, and package is only in system for 24 hours so less time for snafus. If you print label on USPS.com, you get a discount, too.

Not yet. It was actually a card I was returning due to not being as described. It was a Seaver RC PSA 9ST. I had asked the seller prior to bidding if there were any other flaws besides the front surface wax. They said no, but I saw a clear surface wrinkle when I received it. I provided the PO with the original Paypal transaction showing I paid $930 (I insured it for slightly less). The package did forward from the small USPS office I sent it from to the distribution center at a nearby large city office. It's after arriving at that point, that's when it disappeared.

I hope you get your money back, John. It should be an easy case to close with your paypal receipt. I often wonder how you would prove value for an item you've owned a long time and are shipping to, say, Steve for shrinkwrapping. If you send in a 1K box that you have owned since buying it 10 years ago for $200, can you still insure it for its correct market value, and will PO pay the claim based on that without a purchase receipt correlating to that current market value.

If not, wouldn't a coin from the 1860's only be worth face value? I can't imagine how the PO would defend that stance.
Just my 2 cents.
it's almost impossible anymore to defend against the "lost" package.

That's a tough one. I actually fell into that situation very recently. I had a wax box I shipped to BBCE for authentication. It was one I purchased a few years ago with a bunch of unopened and raw cards. I paid cash in a lump sum and just got a hand written receipt without itemization. I asked the clerk at the PO if that would suffice as proof but they weren't sure. Even though the box is now worth around $2k, I just insured it for $400 and hoped it didn't get lost. Fortunately it arrived safely.

I have the same issue as a buyer for a $400 package at the moment.
