1980 Topps Cello Box

So I was looking over some auctions and came across a 1980 Topps Cello Box. The box has been shrink wrapped which I'm guessing was added at a later time. My question is would anyone on here bid/buy a box like this? I am not overly familiar with older boxes aside from the fact the prices have skyrocketed over the last couple years.

  • Not on eBay unless sold by BBCE
At minimum shrink wrapped by BBCE if on eBay.
    Ideally direct from BBCE.

    I'm sure it's fine
    It never leaves you...
  • The box is not on Ebay and if I won it I would peel off the shrink wrap and send it to BBCE. I'm just wondering is it super risky to bid/buy this box without being able to actually see the packs inside?

If it's not on ebay, I would double check the return policy of the seller and any satisfaction guaranteed by the auction venue. I'd might be willing to risk on ebay, but only because of their buyer protection. If it was found to be fake, you're going to get your money back.

    Depends on the price.

I would ask the person running the auction to provide a history for the box. As stated earlier, I generally feel more comfortable buying off of eBay because of their Buyer Protection. In this case, you would have to ask the auction seller what their policy is on returns. Without a clear history of ownership my opinion is the seller would be better off showing the packs, front and back, to show their quality if they believe it is legitimate. I would not bid on a non-BBCE wrapped box without being able to see the packs.

What the heck are you talking about? The box that the OP is asking about is not being offered by BBCE.

  • So the auction in which this box was available just concluded. The box sold with premium for $796.50 (I was not the winning bidder). I had talked with the auction house prior and even though the box was wrapped they would have issued a refund if it did not pass BBCE authentication. I don't know what it costs to have the box checked out by BBCE, but I didn't see a lot of money to be made as I would have been looking to resell it.

The cello box just sold for $796.50. I emailed the auction house and was told that they would refund the money if the box didn't pass inspection by BBCE. I didn't win the box.

Did you ask them to tear the shrinkwrap off? I did and she told me she would then 20 minutes later said the owner of the auction house decided not to but would refund if it didn't pass BBCE approval.

I did not ask about them removing the shrink wrap but I did tell them that it wasn't factory shrink wrap.

I said the same thing to them and they said the person who owned the box did it to protect it. Hopefully it turns out well for whomever bought it.

This box is now on Ebay for $1300. I would have at least sent it to BBCE for authentication before trying to sell it.

He may not be aware of that option. He did correct the listing though in that box is not factory sealed as none were.

  • Perhaps he should take more pics of the packs, but his selling history seems legit.

I didn't realize 1978 Topps were issued in 1982. Although I'm sure he's 120% honest, how do we know what happened with the box prior to 1982? Nobody ever resealed packs before then? I remember seeing resealed packs at least as far back as the mid-80s. Probably would have been earlier had I come across older packs before then.

    1980 Topps

It looks like this box sold for $330 below the peak. Is the market softening up some?

One thing I've noticed over the past year or so is the influx of boxes on eBay with BBCE's stamp of approval. In the not too distant past you could've conducted a search and had a couple of fingers left over when using two hands to count. Now? I've seen the figure as high as 150+. The wild appreciation -- combined with increased knowledge of the service Steve provides -- has successfully siphoned some of the unopened goodness from the woodwork, and we're all witnessing a glimpse of what was in there. Save rack boxes, material from '80 is still abundant. Not too terribly surprising. As a result, prices (wax) are retreating from a high of ~$1,100.
