Which Post War HOF has the most ascetically pleasing run of base cards?

I thought i'd get the opinions of which HOFers you feel have had the best LOOKING cards as far as their playing days base Topps Cards.

i like Mantle's Topps cards (who doesn't), but for the most part, they are standard (i.e.. uninteresting) posed and head shots.

I think the Rickey Henderson 1980 Topps is one of the best looking baseball cards ever.

+1. Always been a favorite of mine. The 80 Ryan is a good action shot as well.

I always liked the look of the early Pete Rose cards (64-69).

I think Bob Gibson's cards are visually appealing for the most part. I can't think of one that I particularly dislike. I love the 64, 69, and 71 particularly.

Besides all my Mets cards, this was my favourite card as a kid. The first time I saw it was in a rack pack my mom bought at the grocery store. I did something bad and she either yelled at me or beat the crap out of me. I can't remember. Anyway, I came home that day from school, went into the kitchen and she had laid out a few packs on the counter with a note saying she was sorry. I just remember thinking it was the coolest card I had ever seen. Thanks mom!

    Rickey Henderson AINEC.

Rickey had such a long, elaborate career that it set him up for some of the best looking cards ever. Really those of you that shun collecting modern are missing out on some gorgeous, albeit financially worthless, cards. And Rickey was just set of for photos...his speed, hitting ability, athleticism, and the fact that he is just photogenic. So while his best cards have action shots, many of his standard photos are fantastic. I think some of you are really missing out by shunning "junk wax". An entire album of Henderson base cards would probably cost 50 bucks if you searched out shows/shops and would contain so many great cards.

And BTW, his recent McFarlane figure(easy to find at Toys R Us or online) is just awesome...with a hat for each team he played for!

Clemente needs to be near the top, except for 1961. 62 through 65 are just amazing cards.

I'd go Mattingly, Brett, Ryan, and Mantle.

    The Mick's 51, both 52s, both 53s, 54, 56, 57 are awesome. I also like the 60. I'll admit his 60's are real standard poses.

    Brett's 75, 77, 78 portrait, 79, are all sweet. I also love his 83, 85, and 86.

    Donnie's 84T&F fielding, his 84 and 85D portraits, his 85F, 86T, 88F&T...all cool images.

    Ryan also has a nice mix of portraits (69, 72, 75, 76) and action shots (71, 74, 80).

73 Clemente and 71 Munson. 73 is almost haunting in its shadowy appearance, and the Munson is the action of all action shots.

Edited to add: Munson isn't a HOFer, but sorry Eric, I'm including him anyway. image

Except for a few head shot years throughout his career on cardboard, I always thought Mr. Kaline had some really nice cards from '54 through his Highlight card of '75. Doug

Carlton Fisk has a bunch of really good ones. 74 and 77 stand out but don't discount the angry 1973 also.

I was always a huge fan of his 82 Topps cards.

Funny, I didn't even have to think about this one! By far, the winner is PeeWee Reese!!!!
Starting with of course, the 1953 Color Bowman. Than a great run of other Bowmans including the red background 1949, the unique looking 1951, the butting 1952, and the 1954 & 1955. Than there's his Topps cards starting with a high # 1952, great looking fielding 1957. Even his 1949 M P & Co is a cool looking card.

I am glad someone mentioned Fisk because that is who came to mind for me. I will even venture into modern and say that his 1991 Topps card is up there. It shows him preparing to catch the ball and defend the plate against Cecil Fielder who is barreling down the 3rd base path. You have Dave Bergman in the back signaling Fielder to slide...I can only imagine the epic collision that took place moments later!

    Count me in on Clemente.

Topps captured the essence of the person, especially in the '62 card. So many of the cards depict him perfectly: 70, 71, and that 73 picture is one of the best ever.

The '57 Kaline is a beauty!
  • Throwing out his 55 and 56 cards where he looks blitzed! I've always liked Ernie Banks cards. Most are portraits but nice ones and I've always loved his 54. It doesn't get much better than his rookie in my opinion. Also pretty much love every Ted Williams card out there save his 58.

Good looking guys tend to fare better. Say, Clemente vs. Moon or Mossi.

Reggie, 73 being the exception, had some awesome cards - 74 and 78 tend to stand out.

I have always been disappointed with Topps regarding Mike Schmidt. Half of cards looked liked rushed photos after a hard spring training workout - sweaty, pale, mussed up.

Edit to add - Steve Carlton's aren't too shabby.
  • As an Oriole fan first I'd have to say my favorite run of cards would be Jim Palmers. Can't think of a bad one. He even survived the early seventies without a hitch not many players can claim that.
