I checked out the cheaper (haha) coins. The cheapest non-92/95/97/98 coin is double PCGS price guide.

    1877 S Liberty Head, With Motto Above Eagle Type-III $20 PCGS XF40

$3150 Amazon price vs $1540 PCGS price guide.

The listings look like trouble to me - many on the first page are listed as
    PCGS 92
    PCGS 95
    Grade Rating 92
with no explanation that the 92 and 95 are code for "damaged", not a grade. No photo of the slab.

A quick look at the double eagles in MS63, most are at or just below PCGS price guide.

signed up to get alert, got it around 9 pm Eastern time. went and looked and while coins were nice, they are like 2x-3x the price point for CAC coins. makes no sense. don't know who is buying them...
  • ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,786 ✭✭✭✭✭
794 left! And yes, with encouragement from my wife, I did get one. I saw the MS coins were a better value and found a beautiful 89-S $20 in MS-63 for less than PCGS price guide.

How many coins were there to start tonight, I don't see a count?
  • magikbillymagikbilly Posts: 6,780
Would you pay a strong premium for a coin from an unknown shipwreck, date of and reason for sinking unknown (perhaps a valiant but useless defense against an enemy attack? Pirates? Reef? Drunk commander? Simple open hatch? Insurance scam?), unknown victims (if any), location vague...was it a steamer? Was it sail? Does it matter?

S.S. Republic story had legs for 50 years before the coins get involved...Central America has its tale - where is the story here that will last an age?

Well what can you say? Some see value in a 1st Strike Label. Some see value in a cool $20 California Cache Coin with
a special Gold Foil label. What's the full story on the Saddle Ridge find? Unknown at this time.

I looked at the coins offered. In the end I couldn't help myself, I just had to pull the trigger on a cool MS63. Can't wait to
    see it in hand.

Glad you found one, by any chance was it an 89-S? When I first looked at the listings for the 'damaged' and circulated coins, my heart sank, though I knew the premiums would be steep and ridiculous. When I saw the 63's and the handful of 64's, the prices seemed more reasonable. This is my largest coin purchase by far, and I'm still pretty pumped. Isn't that what it's supposed to be about? Doesn't matter if you spent $5 or $50K, amount doesn't really matter. Who knows what will happen to these in the future, but at least I managed to add a nice looking $20 piece to my collection which I will treasure. Oh yeah, almost an ounce of gold doesn't hurt either! image

Its funny how I picked a few coins from the hoard to see how long they would last -

a 1892-S MS-62+ lasted all of about 15 minutes, then sold

a 1889-S MS-63 is still there ad I believe its one of the most original and mark free obverses of the bunch

just cant bring myself to pull the trigger.
  • 410a410a Posts: 1,325
I saw the 89-S in MS 63+ for $6900 or 900 over Redbook. I know Redbook, but for what it's worth seems like a fair price. Only 1 left.

I see you bought the coin fudrucker! Nice coin! Good buy!
  • 7over87over8 Posts: 4,733 ✭✭✭
forgot to add, i'm extremely harsh on the grading.

out of all the 1889-S MS-63's out there right now, my opinion is that 3 or 4 so make it to the grade - based on my own standards.

If you got the funds and really love the coin, do it! I found 3 89-S's that were very nice, and settled on my pick. I'll bet that's one I saw too, it was tough but I had to choose one!

Looks like all the MS-64's are gone.

The picture quality was very good for the coins in general. Here is my future 89-S in MS-63, some minor marks but love the luster:

Perhaps the appearance before "...Months of painstaking work resulted in an incredible transformation of the coins: in some cases, pieces that appeared to be no better than lumps of dirt or rust were transformed into pristine specimens, thereby adding millions of dollars to the value of the coins. This, "...despite being buried for over a hundred years, many of the coins were preserved in pristine condition; some finer than anything seen to date..." In a quick peek I don't see a mention of restoration on the Amazon pages. I'm sure I am missing it. Do you agree that this lot of coins was "...best served..." by Kagins "...bloody fingers..." and not PCGS Conservation? What differentiates conservation and restoration...that might be the answer to the question at top. I have no idea.

    Eric

I still would have said "revealed" and NOT "added". The former denotes a quality already present. It's just words, right?

I'm still tempted, and looking at the grade/year/MM you got as well....one thing, and I don't mean to be a downer, to think of, is that to compare it to the PCGS price isn't good for an extra reason past the normal ones.....they sell for less and may/should bring the price guide down as they are now lower prices realized.....

Why yes it was an 1889-S, great minds think alike I guess. image

This makes the biggest single Coin I've ever purchase also. It was a bit of a stretch but everything has come together
for me lately. I love $20 Libertys. I always wanted an early 1890's one so an 1889-S is more than I had hoped for.

What happened with that 12 AM Eastern start time? The timing caught me by surprise but I got one so I'm happy.
I was thinking of going back and getting an earlier circulated date but the prices are nuts! Over double PCGS list !
    Totally nuts!

That is the coin I liked also...I got there right away and saw a lot of them. Picked yours as the nicest one I would own out of the bunch.

Will Kagins.com have same coins as Amazon or different? Did they split them apart?

Nope, no downer taken there at all. I saw on the PCGS pop report that there were 101 89-S's from the Saddle Ridge hoard that got a 63, 95 that got a 62, 20 that got a 64 and 3 that got a 65. This date did just get more common, but I tried to get a combo of eye appeal + a not too insane premium to boot. I was scrambling and actually found some old Amazon gift cards and certificates I was able to use, so that subsidized the price a little. I'm still a little wired over this purchase, but I don't think I will lose too much sleep about worrying if the coin's value will hit the gutter, I'm thinking my odds are OK. That being said, I'm not sure if this date will head skyward either due to the quantity. Time will tell.

If I'm looking at the sale right, I don't see anymore net graded pieces. I see the 66-S for $1.2 million listed at the top now. Any takers?

Thanks. I missed that. Just started looking at these tonight and have a few browsers open (doing work, helping son with homework, checking these forums, AND doing the AMZN check on these).....too split to see it and feel bad I had to ask.

I checked out the cheaper (haha) coins. The cheapest non-92/95/97/98 coin is double PCGS price guide.

I recommend that the astute collector be patient for a few years.Once the initial fascination with these coins has subsided there will be plenty of coins available to whoever wants them and they will be priced considerably less than double or more PCGS price guide.

"Only one in stock".....shouldn't this phrase be reserved for the coin or coins where there is only one example of the date and mint available for sale?

In this case they mean unique Cert#, clearly. Each coin is unique, in so far as it has unique marks, etc.
